So pit, I'm usually the one answering these threads, but tonight it's my turn to ask.

I'm looking for something that is scary, but not "psychological horror" like Jacob's Ladder or something. I don't want to think to hard. I'm looking for something ghostly, spooky, classically scary etc.

Think Paranormal Activity, The Descent, that kind of scary.

Carrie (total classic), Tale of Two Sisters (if you can watch movies with subtitles), Eraserhead (arty, but spooky), Slither (not scary, but funny), The Exorcism of Emily Rose (not scary, but spooky), Drag Me to Hell (just plain funny), Wolf Creek (just awesome, Aussie movie).

Horror has a whole heap of sub-genres associated with it. I could go on forever listing the best ones, but it's better you find out which you like for yourself.
And no, Guitar Hero will not help. Even on expert. Really.

I would recommend almost any film by Dario Argento. He is a master of Italian Horror, and does great murder scenes. His movies scare you and make you think at the same time.

What was scary about the movie "Paranormal" was that the couple had a sexless marriage...seriously wtf.

I was always terrified of scary movies, i cud never watch them at all and would totally bich out. Then i watched Amityville Horror, and absolutely nothing scares me anymore and i love them and always watch scary movies in dark and windy settings. I'd definately suggest Amityville horror haha.

The first few hellraiser movies

honestly, any really gory horror from the 80's, the puppet-like sfx at that time was honestly real creepy. Oh, and puppetmaster, not really scary, but its entertaining

oh and one more: this one I think is fairly meaningful, but you can definately enjoy it for all its visual excess:

I've seen a few of the foreign ones like Audition (that one was bloody hard to get through), the thing is they're just so hard to find unless I watch them online.

I was just going to say this. IMO gore effects in the 80s were the goriest, and most visually disturbing there have ever been. one that really stands out for me is in the film The Fly, the scene where the guys hand is melted off by stomach acids. It's just... so so ****ed up

The hand melting isn't a big deal if you know how it was done. And it wasn't much different than the face melting scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark. My dad showed me horror movie make up documentaries when I was a kid. Ruined everything. I had to get by enjoying story lines alone.

I have an easy time finding them. And if I can't, there's always Amazon. No one can complain about things being hard to find when we have Amazon.
