Hey guys.

Im always thinking about what Im going to do next with gear. Im sure its the same for most of you as well. The newest idea that popped into my head was doing a small wattage stack with a 2x12.

Im thinking about some sort of Avatar cab like this...

http://westernmass.craigslist.org/msg/1936712756.html

I figured that would work well.

Now the head is what Im not very well known about. I need a head that delivers really good cleans, but can also do some heavier stuff. I enjoy playing blues and classic rock, but I need it to get some heavy distortion and stuff as well. The heaviest I would play is GnR and Coheed & Cambria.

I know for a fact I will be buying used. I have time so I can wait around for the right deal to pop up, but I am looking at spending no more than $450 USD (used) for a head.

I have heard great things about the Jet Cities, but Im not sure if that will deliver the cleans Im looking for.

Thanks guys!

I have the 20 watt jet city head and I love it. It will definately get you the distorted sound you're looking for. However, the 20 watt is a bit lacking in the clean department (unless you want to mod it.) The 50 watt head would have a lot more headroom.

There are a few new amps you could look at but also make sure you look at used amps too. More bang for the buck but you have to ask questions and play it well before buying used sometimes.

I'm not saying these are perfect for what you do - just showing that there is a nice variety of stuff. What is your closest major city and do you have any decent guitar shops around you?

Thanks for your response ^

Ive seen all those amps on my CL but here is what I have to say...

Is the bassman a guitar amp? I always figured it was a bass one.

How many of those would actually work for what I play?

My guess is something like the last one wouldn't work too well.

Closest city is Boston, and I have a Daddys and a GC near me

Forgot to say I do have an OD pedal, and Ill buy a Distortion pedal too

The bassman is a bass amp,, but it caught on more as being used for guitar. Out of those I'd grab either the XXX which will have more than enough gain and nice cleans, or the Mesa DC which will also have both.

So much for not starting a thread

That Avatar cab... I wants...

And I stand by my AC30 suggestion.

EDIT: To stress how much I want that Avatar, I'd probably sell my Mesa then buy it, were I any where near Massachusetts.

Nobody was active in the CL thread today

And I really thought hard about the AC30 but I dont think it had enough distortion. I may be wrong.

EDIT: I prob should have said this earlier. I meant to, I really did.

I can't have anything over 100W. I still need to be able to play this at bedroom volumes. I dont gig all that often.

You can run a guitar into almost any bass head. The reason guitarists started started running their guitars into Bassmans was because they liked the distortion. The original Marshall amps are based on the same circuit.

We would need some more info though to be of most help.

Why do you want low wattage?
How heavy distortion do you need?
What is the heaviest you want to play? Name artists or bands.
Also name artists and bands you need cleans for.
Today's metal does not necessarily rely on heavy distorted tones.
'Really Good Cleans and also do some heavier stuff' is where things can get complicated so there are reasons why I am asking all of this.

The Egnater Renegade combo is $1199 new so it is a bit out of budget but perfect for what you want...I think. I was going off profile and didn't realize Boston was closer. So do you have a good handle on your craigslist or do you want me to pop in and look?

Don't get a distortion pedal.

You could always use a tube screamer. I think that would get you into Coheed territory real fast. As far as cleans go, there are no amps I can personally vouch for that will be better in the same price range.

And to stress how much I want that Avatar, I'd probably sell my Mesa and buy it, if I lived anywhere near Massachusetts.

EDIT: 311 knows more than I do, you're better off listening to him. I still would like an AC30 if I were in your situation

DOUBLEEDIT: The JCA50H is also an option, plenty of gain. I've never played through one (DAMMIT) but if the 20H is any indicator, it's a great amp. I just think that an AC30/50 is better for you though. Possibly also an old Fender, there's a whole shitton of vintage Fender heads I can recommend, but all are gonna be a bit pricey used.

Don't get a distortion pedal.

1. 50W or lower
2. Heaviest would be Coheed in their GA1 era
3. Coheed and GnR is heaviest as stated above
4. Cleans for John Mayer, Coheed, everything else clean. I also play at church so having those sparkling cleans is a great thing to have.
5. I don't really play metal, except for Coheed
6. I have a OD pedal but I can get a Dist

And yeah Im on my CL daily, but if I dont know what to be looking for I dont look for it.

EDIT: Oh and low wattage due to being a 75% bedroom player

It is a sweet looking cab you found.

Jet City JCA20 sounds like a good rec.

I'd look at this Mesa .50 Cal, Traynor YCV50, Peavey VTX, Ampeg Reverborocket, JCM900, Peavey XXX, Vypyr 60, Marsahll DSL 401.

http://boston.craigslist.org/search/msg?query=amp&srchType=A&minAsk=300&maxAsk=600

PS: don't get a distortion pedal. get an OD pedal and run it clean.

Also: Lots of higher gain stuff comes from the preamp section of the amp so wattage is not always an issue. Actually, a low wattage amp for most metal is hard to pull off because you get power tube distortion when you wanted preamp distortion and you have no headroom left. So for all we know, a Bugera 6260 may be perfect. Doubt it, but you never know it.

What? The Bugera or all the other amps I've found?

The answer is Yes and Yes.

The Bugera has a clean channel and built in reverb so I say yes. All of these bullet points are true except maybe the last one

* Hand-built 120-Watt amplifier driven by 4 x 6L6 valves (convertible to EL34)
* Classic 2-channel preamp design (Clean, Crunch, Lead) featuring 5 x 12AX7 valves for terrifying punch and mind-blowing gain
* Integrated high-class reverb with dedicated Reverb control for each channel
* Vintage Equalizer section with dedicated Bass, Mid and Treble controls
* Classic Presence control per channel for awesome sound shaping
* Impedance switch (4, 8 and 16 Ohm) to match virtually any speaker cabinet
* Heavy-duty footswitch for Channel selection and FX Loop function included
* High-quality components and exceptionally rugged construction ensure long life

^ lol.

But the thing is, you see so many threads by people who're complaining about their Peavey 6505s and Laneys and Fenders and Oranges and Marshalls and Randalls, that honestly, we've seen fewer Bugera cases in the recent past. :/
