So I was bored this morining, and I've had an old Squier neck with the frets ripped out lying about for ages. I acted on my boredom and this is what happened:

It amazed me how many spare parts I had lying about, so this didn't cost me a penny!

Just thought I'd share this with UG

Get a few more strings, raise the action and you could have a sort of slide/ lap steel guitar there.

sounds pretty good actually.

the action is high enough, the idea was a kind of 3 stringed lap steel - 3 strings is plenty, the idea was just simplicity (tuned DGB).

might post a video later.

That's pretty cool, man. I'd call it the "Lap Rat". Nice playing too, were you using a knife for a slide? If so, that's some cool Old School shit right there.

Could be a bitch setting the intonation!

seeing as it's played with a slide and plenty of vibrato, it doesn't matter that much. just had a shot in the dark though, and it's pretty much spot on!

just a crappy old humbucker off my yamaha pacifica (which for some bizarre reason has squier electronics in it right now).

one day i might put a nicer one in, and considering adding an on board distortion unit, but for now the idea was that it cost me absolutely noting to build.

I saw the handle the second time...

I've read that some of the old juke joint delta boys would use a knife as a slide. I guess it deterred unwanted bullshit from some of the more seedy members of their audience. You'd think it would be hell on the strings though, even if one of the edges wasn't sharpened...

you inspired me to build one of these myself. I love having old parts lying around. all I have to do to finish this thing is put on the tuners and output jack, then wire the pup and jack together. DIY or die!

And if it was sharpened then it'd be hell on the edge.

The Edge is also a guitar player. He doesn't fit here.
