I have a Crate Blue Voodoo 120W amp head that I'm using on the clean channel with a Boss ME-50 on my distortion setting of choice. How much of my tone is coming from my tubes being overdriven when I'm running it high, and how much is my pedal doing? I just don't know if I'm tricking myself into thinking that "oh it's a tube amp, it's automatically sounding better" or not. It's not a huge issue because I like my tone, I'm just curious.
Gig Rig:

Schecter Hellraiser V-1
Crate BV120H
B-52 LS 4x12 cabinet
BBE Rackmount Sonic Max
Boss ME-50 Pedalboard
Digital Reference 2505 Wireless

I don't like BTBAM. Sue Me.

I have, and it's good for like old-school metallica and megadeth type stuff, but it's not quite there for the really heavy shit

Well what do you consider "really heavy shit" that you can't quite reach?

Like Job For a Cowboy heavy (not saying I dig their tone or the band itself, but it's an example). I can reach it with my pedal no problem, I just would like to know if that pedal is the one giving me the tone rather than my amp.

You CAN play anything with anything....but some guitars sound right for some things, and not for others. Single coils sound retarded for metal, though those who are apeshit about harpsichord probably beg to differ.

I was just going to suggest what oneblackened said. Try boosting the amp with an overdrive. As for the tone, as long as you like it, does it really matter?

I'm assuming with an OD pedal? Sorry, tube n00b here, that was my first inclination but I don't think I've used an OD pedal correctly because it always sounds like garbage when I do.
