So i custom built my pc about 5 years ago... which means that its now outdated... so i've been looking at doing either a few minor upgrades or a major overhaul.

Firstly, i wanted to know if an AMD ATHLON 64 X2 cpu will fit into my MSI K8 mainboard that is holding a sempron 3100+ (socket 754) at the moment.

being a dual core instead of the single core should give a drastic boost.

Second question is, (assuming the athlon 64 x2 works with my pc) would you recommend getting an entire new motherboard so i could throw in a better cpu, or should i go with the athlon ?

Its quite likely that there are multiple versions of the processor you're after to match whatever socket you have. When searching for that processor, just look for the version which has the same socket as yours.
