Hello Everyone,

First Id just like to say after being a long time windows user i upgraded to my first mac other than just ipods.(lol) A macbook Pro 13'' with 250GB HD. Now I am no computer wiz which I know most of you probably are thats why I am here. The 250gb HD is probably enough for me but i do have about 50gbs of music and Im always getting more also i will be adding video and my own recordings to the Macs HD. So I was thinking of getting a low priced external HD but being CPU illiterate I come here for help. Below is a list of questions and what I need in a HD any recommendations and answers to my questions is very appreciated.

Questions-
- is it simple for me to use a program like AVCware to get all my songs of my ipod and onto an external HD?
-is it easy for me to play the songs off the external HD in itunes?
-what else can i use an external HD for?

I may think up more so bare with me lol

Requirements-
-SIMPLICITY
-dosent need to be more than 250GB but if its not alot more 500 would be excellent.
-under 100 USD would be excellent.
-Id like to buy in person so something from a best buy or a Walmart/Meijer or something like that would be best but if online is the best deal i can do that.

may add more later but thats all for now thanks alot guys!!

ps. remember to keep it simple im no cpu wiz.

update after some research ive found that western digital has awful reviews so heres some i am considering any info on any of these would be great

Walmart.com: Seagate FreeAgent GO 500GB 5400RPM Portable Hard Drive, Silver w/ Silver Trim: Computers

Walmart.com: Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex 500GB USB 2.0 Ultra-Portable Hard Drive, Silver: Computers

Walmart.com: Toshiba Canvio 640GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive, Rocket Red: Computers

Walmart.com: Iomega eGo 500GB USB 2.0 Portable External Hard Drive, Silver: Computers

thanks for the help

I bought a 250gb Western Digital "My Passport" External HD for $40 on bestbuy.com the other day, I'd suggest going there and checking it out.
If it were socially acceptable, I would drape myself in velvet.

1. if you're talking about from your ipod to the HD, it's slightly complex, but if it's just from another computer to the HD, it's easy as copypasta.

2. extremely easy, but might cause small lags/skips in the songs when listening since it's a whole other piece of hardware. but it's only during playback, not on the tracks themselves.

3. EVERYTHING. you can put files, movies, documents, pretty much everything you'd save on your Mac's HD except things like the OS (Operating System), main system components, etc.

Despite the negatory reviews, I'd highly recommend Western Digital's HDs. I picked up a terabyte (1000 GB) HD from them for about 120 at Best Buy. It's worked splendidly. Also had a 120gb and a 250gb of theirs. They work well. External HDs are really inexpensive these days. Hell, you can get a flash drive that's upwards of 20 something gigs for 15-20 bucks.

I'd recommend a WD MyPassport. Like $80 at Best Buy for a 320GB drive. To get the songs off your iPod you'd need special software, but once you have access to the actual files you just drag and drop to the HD.

You can't transfer files from your PC to your Mac with the HD though, it formats to whatever OS you plug it into first, then isn't compatible with the other without reformatting, which can get a little complicated.

Seagate is really good when it comes to HD...so any of the models would do...one important thing is the RPM, get a HD with high RPM than 5400.....and for usage you can use it for any purpose, u can even boot from an external HD....when u connect it to ur PC its just like another drive so u can also play songs using itunes too......
hope it helps........\M/

this is what i would suggest. i just bought the 320Gb model for college for about £50 from PCworld.

very simple to use, just drag any files you want into it when you plug it into your computer. to put your itunes library in there however i only know from a PC. but you could find it out on google quite easily.

nice and small too so you dont have to lug around a massive brick around.
