My friend is pursuing a Mars Volta kinda sound, and he's taken it upon himself to build up a rather large assortment of pedals. He has a tuner pedal, wah, distortion, overdrive, eq, flanger, delay, whammy, noisegate, and an MXR micro amp for a signal boost.

What would be the best order to set these up? I gave him some suggestions on how to set it up, but I thought I'd ask you guys for some solid info.

tuner, eq, whammy, wah, micro amp, od, dist, flange, delay (last two in fx loop if you have it), noise gate.

but mainly, just see what sounds best.

put the EQ in the loop and the boost after the distortion

See, I was thinking having the boost at the end, in case there's signal drop off, he can use the boost to keep the volume up enough when it goes into the amp.

yeah or if he wants an actual volume boost whenever for solos for example
putting a boost in front of distortion will just plug more gain into the distortion

That can cause an oscillating effect though, right?

This is wrong. One part of it is.
Noise gate should always come before Delay. Otherwise, if it's after the delay, your delays will get cut-off.
It also depends on what he's using the noise gate for. If it's to tame a noisy pedal, then put it before delay.
If it's just to cut the guitars signal, put it after the tuner. Or before the tuner.

It's because he's not really a very smooth player and hasn't yet figured out how to use his hands to block out unwanted string noise. I've told him if he just practices his technique and stuff, it'll eventually come to him, but he doesn't want to wait

So then at the very front of the signal chain. Before the tuner.
He must have that thing set pretty damn high to clean up his sloppy playing.

That would explain it. His sloppyness I mean.

I'd get a loop station, but tell him he should experiment.
