I don't know how to describe the tones of instruments; what's bright, what's dark, what's warm? I have to do an assignment for my music class in which I need to describe the sound of 5 instruments of an orchestra. ("example: “like a bird,” “nasal,” etc.")

Bright = Standing Bass
Warm = Harmonica
Dark = Fiddle

This.
And these also something called Timbre (pronounced tamber) which describes a sound by comparing it to the sound of an instrument. So it is okay to go "that sounds pianolike.'

Let it be known that Doctor Matthews posted to correct ironman's pronunciation of 'timbre', but then found out that he was actually correct all along and deleted his post in shame.
