then you can forget sounding halfway decent until you change your mind and decide you ARE looking for an amp.

Pedals are trash compared to amps, but if it's what you can afford, go search the pedals on youtube and see how they sound for yourself.

okay.. it looks like you have gotten too much shit for this.

Check out tube screamers. Those might be good for your sound. A metal zone would be good too. That's what I use. It ranges from like a prog rock sound to a really gnarly metal sound. Wooh!

no. bad. TS, these pedals only can show their true potential through a good amp. I very strongly suggest evicting that MG from your world and acquiring a new (preferably tube or high quality solid state) amp. A good quality tube amp will help show the dynamics and character of your guitars. On top of that, the distortion you get from overdriving a tube amp's pre-amp section would be exactly the distortion you are looking for.

Take home message -> save up for a new amp, that solid state practice amp just will not cut it.
Fender 5 String Jazz Bass
Fender Precision Bass
Peavey TNT 115
EHX Bass Big Muff Pi
Daneletro Cool Cat OD V2 (excellent pedal)
Paul Reed Smith SE Custom Semi-Hollow
Peavey Classic 30

AS lethal as most of these guys sound, I agree. Distortion pedals + bad solid state amps (like the MG series) just don't mix well. Tubescreamers especially.
