Aw-sum.

My favourite albums of this year so far --

Darkthrone - Circle the Wagons
Hellish Crossfire - Bloodrust Scythe
Hooded Menace - Never Cross the Dead.

An honourable mention goes out to Cathedral with The Guessing Game, which I thought was very nicely executed.

The biggest disappointment? I'd wager that title goes to Snakes for the Divine.

Looking forward to listening to those Dødsengel, Children of Technology and Fukpig albums, all of which I've had for bloody ages, it seems.

The forthcoming album I expect the most of - Autopsy's new one, without a shadow of doubt.

Move along.

Bands/Artists of the month; Marco Sfogli, Marco Sfogli and Marco Sfogli .

wat

Anyway, there's been lots of really good stuff out this year but recently Beacons by Cloudkicker has been blowing my mind.

And I'm looking forward to Gorguts and Jupiter by Atheist, primarily because I know the former will be awesome and I just want to hear all of Jupiter. Valley of Smoke by Intronaut should be amazing as well.

Periphery by Periphery, Their self titled album. IS the (my) best metal album of 2010.

Is that so hard to comprehend?

Yes, seeing as it's stale, boring and drags on forever.

What Dep said pretty much... I mean, it would be better if they waited for their singer's voice to mature more (because he HAS improved lately), they cut out all the ridiculous ambient outros, shortened several songs by 2-3 minutes and removed a few altogether, but still...

Gorguts
This falls firmly in second place on my excitement scale, mostly due to not having heard any previews of the new album.

So far it has been a pretty crappy year for metal. 2010 seems to be the year for Hip Hop. Pensées Nocturnes' Grotesque has been the best record in my opinion so far. Blackjazz by Shining (the Norwegian band) is an honorable mention as well as Dax Riggs' Say Goodnight To The World, although that hardly qualifies for metal. Basically I'm only looking forward for Sodom's new record.

I might also add that Belus has been the biggest disappointment this year, though I didn't have much expectations in the first place.

Shad - TSOL
Sage Francis - Li(f)e

really though, been a good year for brutal death. Aeon, Severed Torture, Short Bus Pile Up, Hour Of Penance, the Fleshgod Apocalypse ep...

new Autopsy will for sure slay anything that came out this year though.

Lunatic Soul II comes out October 25th. It's not metal at all, but it is the solo project of the singer of a metal band that blew my mind.

Beacons by Cloudkicker definitely lived up to the hype for me.

Tosin Abasi released a single in June (according to iTunes, wiki says 2009), I liked it but I'm still clueless on whether or not there's an album to go with it since I only recently discovered Animals as Leaders.

That's all that I really know of right now. Stuff I'm still waiting for that probably isn't coming out this year include a new Tool album and a Ron Jarzombek project (didn't he say he was planning a new Blotted Science album?) and that new DT album that will tell us whether or not they can really survive without Portnoy.

Btw when you put Retraced under surprises/letdowns... did you mean a surprise as in you didn't know it was coming, or a suprise as in you thought it would be much better? I haven't bought it yet so I can't say much about it, all I know is it's a bunch of slower versions of the tracks on Traced in Air.

^dude, the AAL album's been out for days

Curious for the new Cryptopsy ep just to see if there's any hope left with Youri, and still waiting for Unhuman's debut to drop, even though it was supposed to come out a year ago.

Got to see Converge and Bane live. Sadly, those were the only two big shows I went to all year.

Excited for agalloch, enjoyed Negura Bunget's newest, kinda let down by new Drudkh.

EDIT: new fen coming out?? intriguing

The new Mekong Delta was a big, positive surprise. As a disjointed, fast, and musically overactive prog-thrash band, the last direction I would imagine them taking in the realm of progressive metal is one with strong Pain of Salvation influence. However, in doing so they finally managed to take a sound that was too quirky and one-sided for me to really fall in love and ended up with a simply great and fresh progressive metal album. Their first album with good production, too.
