I guess I tend to hit the bottle pretty hard, but I only really save that for the weekend but once I start drinking I don't stop. Usually have six 500ml cans for pre-drinks and then go on to drink pints non-stop until the night ends. I can tolerate it physically but my drunkeness leads to many awkward moments (like last night taking a sleep-piss on my mates drumkit & crushing a pint glass with my hand)

Now this seems pretty standard for our generation, but my dad just gave me a lecture about "the road to alcoholism". The thing is I can easily go a week without it, it's just the weekend when I let loose. I guess I often use it to counteract my low confidence but mostly because it's fun. I don't have alcoholism in the family but I guess I have the slightly addictive/"all or nothing" trait (past food binge/purge traits included ).

So should I heed my dad's warning and drink a bit less? or is he just being a worried parent?

I agree with him.

he is being a worried parent AND you should drink less.

You simply don't have any self-control which can lead to alcoolism.

It's not cool go get plastered every single week-end. That's pretty dumb.

you should drink less, just because that'd be sensible. up to you though obviously. he's overreacting slightly but that's what parents do

he sounds like a worried parent tho if I were you I'd cut down on the drinks if you get piss drunk every weekend Depends of course. How old are you etc.

Drink less. He's right, and besides, drinking in order to have fun is such a stupid habit.

Getting drunk every weekend isn't a good idea and can lead to serious problems. I would tone down the drink, maybe have a few on the weekends and save getting drunk for rarer nights.
#12
Go get hammered.Seriously now,all this alcoholic shit is BS.If you can skip drinking a whole week, you're fine so live up the weekend. That is,if you're still under 30.
If you could reason with religious people, there would be no religious people.

What you're doing, by definition, is binge drinking. The more you do it, the more likely you are to develop alcoholism. Being able to crush a pint glass in one hand isn't normal behaviour- glass cuts hurt. Surely you can see that isn't a good thing?

Cut down. You can still have a good time if you cut out a few pints, plus it leaves more weight in your wallet than on your belly.
#14
To me, it seems like you're a typical binge drinker. It's not as if you're glugging a bottle of whisky a day, but it's hardly brilliant. I'd heed his warning, not in terms of alcoholism, but just so you don't end up in hospital one Friday night.

back in my day we didn't need alcoholic beverages to have a good time. just good ol' fashioned weed

I see no problem with it.
If this is just a weekend thing, go for it. Not like you're drinking yourself to oblivion nightly. I'd take the precaution (A) not to drive of course, make sure you have a safe way home (B) preferrably go out with others, as so you have someone to help you stumble around drunkenly without somehow running into traffic, jumping off a ledge, ect.

I drank alot for quite a while. I barely drink at all now. "The Road to Alcoholism" is a stretch to me. I used to get piss drunk every weekend just like you describe. I've never had any pissing incidents, but I've admittedly had a few drunken mishaps of my own. (Back flipped off of a couch thru a coffee table last New Years. No injuries, though. I consider it a drunken accomplishment)

Drink less. He's right, and besides, drinking in order to have fun is such a stupid habit.

What? Drinking/Getting drunk is fun. Why the hell else would you do it?

In summary, if your weekend fun isn't leading you to drinking during the week, hindering you from responsibilities (job, school, ect), and you're reasonably safe while doing it, I say CHEERS MATE!

Not that you're an alcoholic, but if you were your reaction would be to think that he was over-reacting. Denial is funny like that.

Love it when people drink just to get drunk. What ever happened to having a drink with friends, instead of getting wasted, pissing on a drum kit and then not remembering jack shit. Assuming you're 18 or of similar age, it's your decision if you want to get wasted every weekend or not, but it will eventually lead to bad shit.

Every weekend? Tone it down. Imagine also the money you drink. You could use some of it for new guitar gear.

Well, at least he's not straight up denying it -- he did come here for opinions.

Honestly, a lot of binge drinkers develop alcohol problems and if I were you I'd stop drinking period for a while. I'm extremely biased on this subject, so take it with a grain of salt.

chill out on the drinking, at least the kind of drinking that gets you pissing on a drumkit... The fuck is that about?

You're drinking way too much, you should listen to your dad. He just doesn't want anything bad to happen to you.
You don't have to stop drinking completely or anything, but maybe not drink so much at once/not every single weekend.

More or less every weekend. I blame city life - if I lived in the peaceful wilderness I would probably be more content with being "present", climb trees, make fires etc. For example when I go travelling I can tone down the booze. I guess it's just the mundanity of day-to-day suburban life that is such drab.
...hmm but after dealing with one addiction I have a slight taster how life ruining they can be and I'd hate to fall into the trap of another (more severe) one. I'm tempted to calm down a little bit, but going back to uni with the "mid-week drinking" over "weekend drinking" culture, plus me coming down most weekends to see my mates in London leaves me feeling like I should just have fun and worry about this later. but then again the old quote "too little too late" lingers in my head

All this has got me thinking.

p.s. the problem about drinking less when I start once I reach the state of tipysness the drive-to-get-drunk in my head takes over and that is when control is lost.

Even when I used to drink with friends sometimes, I'd never get pass out drunk. I take a few shots and then just relax and enjoy the buzz. I find it way more appealing to actually remember the funny things that happened to me as opposed to forgetting everything and being horribly sick.

I'd say try to drink a bit less OP ^.^

Probably not. My sister has some friends that live in the middle of nowhere and ALL they do is drink and smoke, basically every night because there's nothing better to do :P

This.

A lot of the time you can have a waaaaaaaaay better time on 3 drinks than you can on 18. it loosens your tongue just enough to allow you to have intelligent and articulate conversations, but you don't gross people out by being a drunken slob. Win.

You're so cool.

Sure the occasional few drinks are nice to get a bit happy but why do people think it's fun to get completely wankered every weekend?

This is true. I've gotten into many intelligent debates at the bar with friends and with others after I've had 3 or 4 beers. The words seem to come much easier when slightly buzzed.

Completely agree. I will go out and have a few about once a month. Keeps it novel then. Gives you something to look forward to. And I don't go out with the intention of getting drunk. I go out with the intention of having a drink and socialising, however, it usually ends up with people buying me drinks and getting me drunk.

Why do people do anything for fun? Just because you don't do it doesn't mean its not enjoyable. The guy should probably chill out a bit though.
