I've been playing guitar for about a year now and consider myself a pretty quick learner, and have a good ear for music as well but i know almost NOTHING about the theory of guitar and don't even know where to start...

i would love to play like this guy, he says he can play by ear, but how does he know which chords to play and all? Surely he learned that..

So yea any advice on how i'd go about learning this technique would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

that dudes just gifted. given he says its all in his head...its basically a shit load of noodling. like years of being glued to the guitar. as far as the techniques look up fingerpicking tutorial on youtube. but as far as the level that dude is on, he has put a TON of hours into it

There is only one way. Don't believe anyone who tells you there's a secret or a formula. There is only one way to get good. It's this:

Practice.

Practice hard, practice long. Study theory (check out this thread, https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=503032), learn songs (got some great tabs here on UG), and get some guitar books if need be. You are the only one who will make you a good guitar player. The only way to do that is to practice!

I disagree. Practice and Play. That way you get cake and *gasp* eat it too. Practicing long is good but it easily becomes boring, bad for you, and potentially could lead a person to quit. So 3 hours of Practice and 3 hours of play and bam you can become that guy if your dedicated and have the fire. To the OP, if you really want to dedicated your guitar carrer to immitating a person's playstyle just study his techniques and cover pop songs while embracing the melody and rhythm of the song. Easy as pie.
