Got my six string from rondo a month back, and finding it impossible to do anything remotely technical (more than playing the same note for multiple beats) due to thumb pain on the fretting hand. Is my technique just awful, does it come with time, or is it my short fingers on the giant neck? Contemplating selling it and buying a http://www.rondomusic.com/spjashlefty.html instead. Played a ibanez 4 string my local store and it was leaps and bounds easier to play arpeggios on.

Have you played bass before and this is a 2nd bass? or is this your first time playing bass?

If it's the first one and you've built up correct technique and comfortable playing other basses, maybe this 6 string just isn't for you. Loads of people have troubles with certain necks (P versus Jazz bass debates, Warwick baseball bats, etc). If you're finding an Ibanez nice to play, i'm going to completely guess and say it was an SR necked Ibanez? and if so that would make sense.

If it's your bass time playing bass, I'd check the lessons part of this website on how to correctly fret a bass. It sounds like your thumb may not be in the the most economic and comfortable position. If after a few weeks you're finding the 6 string a challenge, maybe try something different. You don't want your first bass to be one you find uncomfortable, that will really put you off.

Good luck!

This is my first bass, yes. Probably not my best idea to buy a 6 for my first haha. Playing a rondo Douglas at the moment. You mind linking to that article?

Hey, at least moving to 4 and 5 strings won't be such a stretch for you later on lol.

Oddily enough, I checked out all the beginner bass lessons on this site, and I couldn't find a single article about left hand technique, unless i'm missing something?

Here are a few examples I found on a quick Google search.
