I gots to get one for work. I don't need great graphics/video. I don't need uber memory or hdd capabilities. I don't need something to play music/games/movies.
I need something that will simply take a beating. It's going to be used as a diagnostic tool. It's going to be dropped, frozen, baked, rained on, covered in jet fuel and hydraulic fluid. I'm looking for something that is extremely durable. Any suggestions?

I'm leaning towards a Dell. Price is no object. Durability is the only criteria.

Panasonic Toughbook. I've been told you can beat the hell out of those and still not cause any damage to it.

I can't tell you about Toughbooks (although I've heard the same thing) but I can tell you to get away from Dell. I just got a new laptop after 4 years of struggling with that jackass Dell of mine. It ran smoothly for about a year and then after that it was all over.

I'd rather post a chat up line with an escape route in case it starts going wrong.

My last job the company had a Dell I used and abused as a diagnostic tool. Never had a problem with it.

Bs. Acer is fine.
And their hardware configurations are usually the best for the price (at least here in Portugal).

I'm on my second Acer laptop.
My first one is over 6 years old, and i gave it to my brother last year, who still uses it in a daily basis (to work, watch movies, listen to music, play older videogames, image processing...).

The Acer laptop i'm on right now cost me 700€ in May 2009, and it still has one of the best hardware configurations i see around laptops, even today.

Get a Dell. That's my advice.

Plus, get 3 years of accidental damage support and premium service (or watever its called). That way, if it breaks, you can get a new one/they come and fix it for you.

I've had Dell all my life (except for the shitty ASUS Im using now), and I have never had a problem with it. I had a problem with overheating once, I called them and they showed up the next day and replaced my fans and cooling system... no charge.

So tempted to just post something like:

get a brick, a sharpie and man the **** up.

But in all honesty I have a dell laptop, it's worked fine for years, on it now even. I wouldn't say it's all that durable though and I'm not about to drop it to find out.
