Someone who is a great guitarist in that they have created some of the greatest and most infamous riffs of all time. Not paticularly because of their technical skill or originality (they can be these, but thats not a qualifying factor). Who do you think can be described this way?

I'd say Tony Iommi...

Kenny Burrell. But the best will always, regardless of instrument, be Charles Mingus.
“Anyone can make the simple complicated. Creativity is making the complicated simple.”

- Charles Mingus

He wrote some of the catchiest songs ever, but they still take one hell of a lot of skill to play.

EDIT: Shit, sorry vsdornelas. Let me adjust the top of my post to the correct phrase.

Slash, Matt Bellamy and Jimmy Page.

i know MB isnt quite as 'time tested' as Iommi or Jimmy Page, but my god he can write one HELL of a riff.

Yes, he proves real heaviness should be about weight, and his riffs are damn catchy.

The main reason for that would be that Malcolm Young is responsible for most of the band's riffs anyway...

And AC/DC suck...

I wasn't having a go, I prefer new threads getting made. I was just stating like I liked the title and I made a thread similar which had a stupid title.

I am shocked by the lack of Mark Knopfler in this thread. The main riff from 'Sultans of Swing' is clearly the greatest riff of all time.

DAMN! I forgot! I've just watched him at the Avo Sessions too! Yes, MARK KNOPFLER. Imelda, Money for Nothing, Walk of Life... Needs more Knopfler!
