You use Lemon oil on ebony and rosewood fretboards once or twice a year to clean and help protect them. Anything more then that is overkill and will end up damaging the fretboard and even accumulate under the fret wires.

I have quite a few guitars.
Some have rosewood fingerboards, while others have maple and one has ebony.
The oldest with rosewood is well over 50 years old.

Whenever any fingerboard gets dirty, I use a good cleaner/polish designed for wood. I have used everything from Pledge to Scott's Liquid Gold to Gibson and Fender guitar oil/cleaner/polish. I have done this at least 4 times a year on every guitar, and have never had a problem with any.
