So im basically just interested in what kind of funk is out there that i havent heard yet. ive been getting into some funk stuff lately and i find its the perfect apparatus to bridge jazz blues reggae and rock, if youve got the funk to hold it together you can make a song that holds 4 separate genre's successfully.

Some bands ive been getting into lately are Tea Leaf Green and Herbie Hancock. Something along those lines would be fantastic.

I've gotten into Kool and the Gang recently. Their music also has some pop elements, but it's still pretty funky. Parliament-Funkadelic, James Brown, the Isleys, and Curtis Mayfield (already mentioned in Ramblin' Man's post) are also excellent funk artists.

Must say I'm very happy to see not everyone forgot about the funk.
Now i know they aren't funk anymore and at their funkiest could still be called rock and punk in some way, but the Red Hot Chili Peppers have some funky ass bass lines (looking at you American Ghost Dance). All the rest have been covered.
