He needs a new amp. Definitely. The Spider IIIs are potentially the worst sounding amplifiers you can buy.

Yes, Dave Schools has to be one of the best. Definitely in my Top 5.

The other four, in no particular order:

Kenny Gradney (Little Feat)
Berry Oakley (The Allman Brothers Band)
Allen Woody (Gov't Mule, The Allman Brothers Band)
Todd Smallie (The Derek Trucks Band)

Honorable mentions to:
Juan Nelson (Ben Harper & the Innocent Criminals)
Sven Pipien (The Black Crowes)
Oteil Burbridge (The Allman Brothers, Aquarium Rescue Unit)
Jack Casady (Hot Tuna, Jefferson Airplane)

I'm surprised no ones said John Paul Jones yet. Him and the Lemon Song are a large part of the reason why I picked up bass in the first place.

Well i see a lot of people mentioning:

Cliff Burton
Geddy Lee
Les Claypool
Steve Harris
John Entwhistle

John Paul Jones is good too, but i don't think he must be in the top 5, it depends on how you look at the top 5, the fastest, the grooviest, How much the guy meant for the future of bass playing, and all that kind of stuff. but i don't think he is one of the best. still, it's my opinion xD don't think you guys give a shit haha,

Due to the lack of activity in this forum recently, I'll leave it open.

Sorry, i couldn't put more than 10 choices in the poll, and i chose the names i heard most in the reactions. But i'll count how many people vote for Chris, i haven't heard the names: Jaco Pastoorinius or Ray Schulmann, so maybe if there are more people who vote for them, there may be a chance for them in the Top 5, but i don't think so.

You are making a top bass players thread and you haven't heard of one of the most renowned bass players of all time. Personally I think there are plenty better, but he is one of the most famous jazz/fusion bass players, along with Stanley Clarke.

Anyways, here are my top 5:

1. Sean Malone
2. Andreas Blomqvist
3. Tetsuo Sakurai
4. David Hines
5. Michael Manring

And Renowned session player - known for fretless playing - he's played with people from Eric Clapton to Jeff Beck - recently joining The Who replacing the late John Entwhistle - Pino appears on the new Who album.
