It Ain't Easy Being Proggy

I hate Dream Theater and their music.

Now that that is out of the way...

We all know The Spectre Within and The Awakening. At least you really should by now, I never shut up about it. Sort of a staple when it comes to "Prog" Metal. Let's talk about Prog that predates the Dream Theater disaster a little bit.

Lets also make something clear, "Progressive" is a shite term because it is trying to imply that it is progressing the genre to something new and improved. I can't get behind that. But anyways...

So you might be expecting albums to sound like the previously mentioned Fates Warning albums but that is one thing that made the original generation of Prog Metal so great, they were rather different than each other.

Psychotic Waltz - A Social Grace

Completely devoid of Power Metal if you ask me. Seems less interested in songs more so than feels. Not a great casual listen, but none of these albums should really fall into that category. It's great to hear a piano medley come in and not feel like they forced their way in to sound "artsy" and instead feel right at home. Sometimes moody and introspective and at other times shrilly and frantic. An album with a clear narrative of waltzing pathos.

Slauter Xstroyes - Winter Kills

UG aware of these guys? Think they were mentioned once or twice. A very hard album to nail down to a condensed bite sized description. You'll see a whole lot of shades of Slauter's MO with wide open compositions, razor sharp moments of clarity and jarring spaciness all cohesively presented on one album. Why weren't these guys more influential? Fucking Dream Theater.

Fucking killer album.

Brothers Grimm - Helm's Deep

1990 was a hell of a year for this sound.

Holocaust - The Sound of Souls

Departure from their previous sound. Pretty much all worth checking out. Could have easily been a full length. Little more meatier than previous mentioned albums, more Thrash influenced. Hear that Voivod sound?

Ok, so what?

Prog is hard to please me with. Some ideas I hope to explore with this thread are Prog that does not FORGET it is METAL; Prog that does not conflate technical prowess with merit; Discussing what exactly is "progressive" about this type of Metal.

Also the music is pretty killer.

Saw title got excited and narcissistic.

Read first few sentences and still kept that mindset.

Upset thread didn't end up being about me.

Weren't you getting into the 60's and 70's prog stuff once upon a time? Why can't I recall your taste, if any, in Proggish Metal?

And I knew you'd have that response to the title. When I say Proggy I think firstly you, then music.

What do you think about Hammers of Misfortune? Possibly closer to rock, but they're in the rec thread, and I've made several subtle attempts to bring them up but no one ever has anything to say about them.

Edit: forgot to mention that I love Psychotic Waltz. So fukked.

From what I recall I didn't think too much of them, but I'll give em another go tonight.

Always fancied Pestilence - Spheres. Not sure how progressive it is, certainly underrated in terms of death metal albums. It's pretty simple though, maybe not progressive.

I'll see if I can dig anything up that might be more suitable.

As far as the metal side of prog is concerned, I like forward thinking metal like Beherit's Electric Doom Synthesis. Obscura by Gorguts. THAT ONE DEMO I LISTENED TO FROM YOU IN LIKE 2008 ABOUT JACK THE RIPPER THAT I CAN'T REMEMBER WHAT IT WAS. PLEASE TELL ME SO MY OCD CAN RELAC

Decapitated - Winds of Creation is about as close as I've come to progressive (is that progressive? lol)

Apparently that Black Hole album I posted in your other thread takes a lot of influence from prog-rock, so there's that too.

I will check this stuff out as soon as I can, I've got enough on my plate as it is thanks to your other thread

man I had forgotten all about Slauter Xstroyes, that album was killer. gotta put it on sometime soon.

besides some others already mentioned, early Enslaved was always some of my favorite that I thought got pretty progressive.

Will have to give some of these a listen. And agreed on all counts. When bands try to be "prog," they stop being prog.

From Wisdom to Hate - underrated record. Certainly not as groundbreaking as Obscura, but it's more practical and sensible.

For the 6 people who haven't listened to them - Necromass has this album named Abyss Calls Life. It's a hybrid death / black / thrash album with fantastic composition, flow, and song structure.

I sometimes find myself enjoying From Wisdom to Hate a little more than Obscura.

Full support for people checking out Necromass.

Yeah, I always preferred the less proggy stuff they put out - first 2 albums...above being a great example!
