So... heres the situation. I'm looking for a nice amp to play around with in my house as well as with a band. I used to have an AVT100 but that barely kept up when I played a gig. I have since sold that and am now looking for a nice tube amp. I found a local jcm2000 100 watt w/ 1960B cab for 1200 that I might jump on. Is this overkill? I play pretty much metal but I like to clean it up every once in awhile so I figured a marshall would be a great choice.

I could have sworn that I posted in this thread...

Anyway...

What type of metal are you playing? Throw some bands at me.

A 2000 wouldn't be my first choice for a metal amp.

This. I can't see it doing anything that other amps can't do better for the price, except maybe thrash.

I'm not really big on the JCM2000 DSL's though. There's a lot better for the price IMO.

$1200 is too high for what you are considering.

Better options exist for $1200 IMO.

I'm not very familiar with Mesa amps. I've heard that some models are remarkable and others are more "meh". Its worth checking out if you can go there and try it.

I do know that Mesa's tend to be very versatile but people also claim that you need to be willing to take the time to play with the EQ in order to find the "sweet spot" to get the perfect tone out of them.

Well, it might be able to do the Mastodon and BLS stuff okay and maybe the Tool stuff provided you have a lighter OD for boosting. The voicing will be wrong for the other stuff though.

No it isn't overkill. You will probably never turn it up past about 5 even with a drummer but it isn't overkill unless you want power amp distortion. I've used a 100W Marshall valve amp many, many times at gigs and it was fine to use. I prefer to use 50W amps myself (I normally use a 60W head) because I can turn up the volume a bit higher. You can pull two valves in a 100W amp and run it at 50W though (and switch the impedance to the next setting).
You can turn them down a long way and still use it for practice, I used a 100W JCM900 as a practice amp for many years. The DSL is a much better amp than a JCM900 DR. They sound better turned up but are definitely acceptable for practice at lower volumes, you just have to tweak the EQ to suit.

http://boise.craigslist.org/msg/2237848708.html XXX head, seller a bit high, should be $550-600. just find a decent 212 cab and you'd be set.

or that mesa tremoverb combo that's $1200, but i've not played one to say it will do everything you want.

would that head be the same "loudness" that the jcm would put out?

overall yea. they are both "loud" amps when turned up.

but it's decent at low volumes too.

I've been using an AVT100X for the last 3 years and it 'kept up' to a drum kit fine, I never had to put it more that 7 for a gig.

But I have recently bought a JCM2000 DSL 100 head, and I find it is fine for home use. I gig and practice with the band regularly. I haven't managed to run it anymore than 3 because the sound man doesn't know how to control mic gain. But I'm hoping to turn it up a bit more soon.
People always think having a high wattage amp will instantly knock buildings down, but they come with volume knobs for a reason.

you could do a lot better for metal than that marshall and the mesa DC especially for the amount you're spending

Try a VH140C if you can find one. It's not very expensive, and it's probably my second favorite amp, the Mesa Mark IV taking it of course.

There's a lot better for $500 used? They go for as low as that all the time.

Ahh I can't wait until I get the time to record some clips of my DSL.

But he said he was looking at that and the 1960B for $1200, which isn't too great a deal. I mean, if TS can find one for $500, it would be a wise buy, but it still doesn't suit his genres very well.
