If feminism wasn't about bulldykes moaning about the fact that we men are so simple and stupid, I'd do it.

Yeah, like every female is so ****ing intelligent.

EDIT: Having said that, I respect women, just as I represents men. They're individuals, and to me, other factors are more important.

Why consider yourself a feminist if women in pretty much all the locations of the people on here have equal rights already, and all you will get for being feminist is having people extremely prejudiced negatively towards you?

Because women are still treated unfairly. At the workplace it's harder for women to get a higher position because there's this idea that they're not fit for the job.

Women have it a lot better than they did 50 years ago, but there's still a long way to go.

black people were just asking for it right?

They had very good reasons back then, and sometimes they do have those reasons now, but you can't deny that a lot of people just look for discrimination. Some people even play the race card when they are fired for obvious reasons.

If people are in favour of equal rights they've got the important bit down, it doesn't matter if they call themselves a feminist. This thread seems to be mainly about semantics.

You're right, it is about semantics - semantics play such a huge role in how people view an argument and how receptive they may be to an issue. Literally all I am trying to do is make people more receptive to a broader term of the word 'feminist' so that if an issue does arise at some point in their lives, they don't jump to conclusions.

Most of you are already very much into equal rights. I am happy about that. Most of you are probably also feminists. I'd just like people to be comfortable with the term so it isn't such a faux pas anymore.

People do stupid things all the time. There are middle-aged people who still shove crayons up their nose. You can't judge an entire cause based off of only the dumb/extreme people. Those people who play the race card when it isn't there are discriminatory themselves because they assumed something from a person of another race without considering the other options.

Still, is it really worth it to you to discount the entire movement based off of those few points? You said yourself that you're all about equality, so why go into this with a weary attitude?

Ah, feminism. I remember studying that and going to lectures and listening to rants about feminism and so on. Generally, feminism is women wanting equal rights to men, not equal rights for both genders (hopefully this makes sense to everyone else and not just me), as opposed to what the OP suggests. So yeah...not a fan of feminism myself.

Its not just an equal rights issue. I heard a stat the other day where women do 2/3 of the worlds work, but make 10% of the money and own 1% of the property (or something like that). Keep in mind, that much of this stat is outside of the western world.

Its sort of a division of unpaid labour thing. Most of the work they are talking about in the stats is housework, unpaid housework. The new feminism is in the home, and sharing the work load is the goal. I think men sometimes overlook just how much work goes into housekeeping and child-rearing.

If that is feminism, I've been one for a long time. I do almost all the cooking at home, I give the baby a bath every day, I do the gardening. And I'm the primary bread-winner. I don't mind. It gets me out of the doghouse with ease.

Edit: I'm one of the few who voted yes, I would change my title.

There's different forms of feminism, brah. Mary Astell isn't exactly the same as Selma James. And there are even some feminists like myself who believe that stripping, pornography, and other things of that nature count as feminist.

Anyway, that's why I don't approve of Saadia's idea. My idea of feminism can be different from hers. I don't see any reason to refer to myself as one when some of the supposed misconceptions of feminism DO apply to some feminists.

hopefully this thread will be a little thought provoking

It's not that simple And it's not the same in every situation. This isn't an 'us vs. them' type of discussion. Obviously in this case it was unfair - there was no reason for a female to get more many than a male. It isn't equal. Doesn't that upset you?

This is the thing - feminism really isn't about female supremacy. It's just gender fairness. If you feel you're being treated unfairly based on your gender, it's a part of feminism. I personally am not moaning about anything. I just wish you had read the OP a little more seriously.

Some feminism IS about female supremacy. It's the same thing as Malcolm X being referred to as a civil rights leader when he advocated that blacks and whites should be separate.

I love how women are complaing now the retirement age for women is being raised to the same as mens. I saw some "femminist" on the news the other day complaining about, completely missing the irony that they are now equal to men.

I'm all for equality, but you gotta take the good with the bad.

I'm totally okay with stripping and porn and everything but I do feel like a lot of women get pushed into the idea of selling their bodies because they feel like it's the most cash they can make and aren't worth much more. It's a sticky subject. I don't think porn in itself is degrading to women, and I watch plenty of porn myself, but I do think the market surrounding porn can be degrading.

I'm going for a really broad, modern, un-niched view of feminism. I'm not delving deep in because this whole thing is about semantics. Cory, you're better-versed in the area, so you're going to have a different take on it of course.

There are many feminist movements who feel that doing pornography and things of that nature is degrading to women so women shouldn't do it. If they do it, they don't help with the cause of feminism. This is a common cry amongst many feminists, especially more classical ones. However, I'm a firm believer that doing what you want regardless of what you're told to do, by society... sexist or feminist alike... is more empowering. These types of feminists don't understand that THEY'RE the ones degrading the women, because they're the ones judging them. Just as much as any man who views her as an object. They're treating her like she's brainless or helpless or whatever.

Watch those links in order. Women in pornography don't feel degraded, they feel empowered. They are only told they SHOULD feel degraded. Forcing your opinion on someone and asking for civil rights should both be forthright motives in your cause if you want to be taken seriously.

Well, one example are certain groups of Dominatrix folk. Many consider themselves feminists which is why they insist on being dominant. My television is sitting on my trunks filled with books, so I'm just going to have to see if I can find a link on amazon to books which talk about it. But there's a reason why many feminist groups use Lilith as an icon. It doesn't necessarily have to do with equality. But Lilith disobeyed Adam. And many of these women are firm advocates that Adam came from Lilith.

Feminism isn't necessarily even about equality. It's about empowerment. Whether that empowerment leads to equality in some feminists is just as important in other feminists believing they're better than men. And some feminists don't want either, they just want better lives than they have now.

"Feminist" has been unfairly turned into a dirty word. Both by those who sought to discredit feminists in order to maintain the gender status quo and by feminazis who preached their own brand of hate under the banner of "feminism." Sexism and gender discrimination against both men and women still exists today. Although many great strives have been made in the West for women, inequalities still exist and women in non-Western spheres are still particularly vulnerable to unfair treatment.

Those are a lot of people who take on the 'feminist' name and use it for their own concern. I don't agree with a lot of the Lilith-based feminists, and while they can take on the name and it's all fine and dandy, that's not what the term means. Like I said in the OP, people will use whatever methods and arguments they want to to support the cause, and those methods shouldn't always be used to characterize the nature of the term in its purest form.
