I just got a guitar for $5 it's an emerson brand something or other, all I can find is that it's 20.5 inch scale, and has no truss rod. I'm thinking of doing a light mod job because it looks kind of nice in a small form. but I want to know what strings would be safe on a guitar like that, and could possibly handle open/down tuning for slide.

If it has no truss rod then you'll have to get nylon strings
Gear:
Shecter Omen 6 with Seymour Duncan SH-6
Epiphone Les Paul Standard
Fender Frontman 25r (crappy)
MXR CAE WAH
Digitech HardWire TL-2 Metal Distortion (Makes the amp sound not shitty)

any strings work for any guitar. and yeah i think it's better to get nylon string (not sure though)

Steel strings on a guitar without a truss rod will mess up the neck very quickly

Is this an electric or an acoustic?

If acoustic you're in the wrong place.

If electric, nylon strings won't work...

Most really cheap electric guitars like TS is describing have a truss rod, you just can't adjust it.

TS; you probably won't want to put anything too heavy. I'd say 9's, maybe .10's.
