ok so didnt end up going to GC today like i thought, but i ended up at sam ash instead, asking if they carried the eclipse.

after several times of making it specific, ESP Eclipse. not LTD version. he kept saying ec1000? to me. he decided to check the computer. he then came back and said they didnt have one at their location but could get one shipped by tommorow. i decided not to do that, then be obliged to buy it, but just as i was leaving he asked me why dont i look at a gibson lespaul instead?

thats the 3rd time this week ive had people ask me that and its so annoying.

i explained to him why i dont want a gibson les paul but still, its seriously annoying having to explain this everytime i ask about the eclipse in a store.

because i can find them all over the place near my house, where i never see any Esps .

also the gibson les paul is alot more expensive and would need new pups, since i hate gibson pups. its also heavey as hell, and a crazy thick neck.

id rather have a guitar thats cheaper, with QC, and right specs for me from the factory, that wont kill my back

i don't know if you've thought of this yet, but perhaps you could just tell him you don't want a gibson lespaul and leave it at that.

Dude, go in with pictures off the page of what you want

one it shows prices and two they can't be that blind to NOT notice the thing on the damn pg they're holding

Once I got my RG 420 for 300 bucks off list because of a clearout sale they were having. They didn't have it posted in the store and when i asked for it they said they'd only take full price. Like the smug bastard I am, I bust out their OWN paper and show them. They had one in stock and I got it on the cheap

Gibson Les Pauls are chambered anyway nowadays, so the heavyiness isn't quite true.
You wouldn't hear the difference in pickups through your Spider so that's about the pickups.
Crazy thick neck isn't true again, judging from the Standards I played, they aren't paper thin shredder necks for sure, but not crazy thick as you said.
QC issues are mostly cosmetic, nothing you could normally care less about.
You could even try to haggle the price down a bit because of a not that perfect looking finish and stuff.

Only my 2 cents of wisdom.

ya rly. I mean, a music shop employee suggesting a similar (but not identical) product due to not having one of exactly what the customer wants? In other worse, being a helpful salesperson? God forbid.

ive played a few different kinds of LPs by gibson before, a few studios (hated them), one or 2 traditionals (meh but not worth the 2200-2500 they were selling for) and i played a real gibson les paul once it was good and all, but the neck was thicker than i like and it was heavy and the price tag killed me (2900$)

also ive found from what ive played, that upper fret acess is alot better on the eclipse that i played compared to all the Gibsons ive played.

true i have never touched an LPC but the price tags on those are huge O.O

its just that i find them to be very different guitars, except for the shapes which are almost the same, but they play and sound completely different.

and i know the spider is a crap amp,ats why im picking up a peavey 6534+ as soon as i get back home

So you passed on an offer to fondle a Les Paul for free? You didn't have to buy it...

there should be a guitarshop rant thread..

I second this notion.

Ontopic:

I hate it when the guitar I plan to try out isn't available.
I rarely pass up an offer to fondle an expensive new guitar though.
Ceci n'est pas une signature.

I've had worse. One that I love to tell:

Me: Hi I'm looking for an Epiphone semi-hollow. I used to own an Epi Casino and loved it but I want something semi and with humbuckers.

Guitarshop Goon: Oh you have to try this then. It's just beautiful.

He hands me an Epiphone Casino, plugs me in (into the shittest modelling amp in the world) and walks off before I have a chance to say anything. I then had to play it for a while not to look like a complete ass.

I was once looking at some Fender and Vox tube combos and the twat in the store pointed me towards some Marshall MGs because they had "rockin' cleans". And yeah he really did say "rockin'". I count my blessings that he didn't say crushing.

That would really tick me off. I've never liked Les Pauls, but ESPs are sweet. That guy was just trying to make a sale.

People at big retail shops don't give a damn about what you want, because they're paid to sell, and that's it. I've never bought a guitar from Guitar Center, Sam Ash, etc.

Any guitar I get comes from a local shop or online.

i know that in shops like that it comes across as being a bit pushy, but i think you should always try every alternative that you can when buying a new guitar, so actually them suggesting that you try a gibson les paul might have been helpful. you might find an alternative that you like better and ultimately be more satisfied than if you set yourself one one particular brand or model and refuse to try everything else.

what's annoying is when people in guitar shops try to push irrelevant things at you that are the complete opposite of what you're looking for..

"hey, i'm looking for a single channel tube amp in the £1500 sort of price range" "hey check out this kick-ass amp from line 6 its totally awesome and a lot cheaper and has lots of FX" "uhm, no, i'm looking for a basic, no-frills tube amp with just 1 channel and no onboard FX or anything like that" "you don't need a tube amp dude these line 6 amps rock! you can get like every tone ever out of them" "that's not what i'm looking for" "oh, ok, tube amps, right? how about you check out this new tube amp from line 6!"... etc... dicks.
I like analogue Solid State amps that make no effort to be "tube-like", and I'm proud of it...

...A little too proud, to be honest.

well today i went to a GC and A/B'd a gibson les paul studio upgraded with burstbuckers and that was a pretty solid guitar. the guy there mentioned something about it being the best quality gibson studio they had (buildwise) and it was pretty good, the burstbuckers thought actually sounded alot more articulate than the eMGs in the eclipse. and ofc the cleans were alot better than the EMGs. it was wierd because the sound from the studio was better for my style, rather than the eclipse, but the eclipse looks better and was a bit more comfortable. mind you thought that, this is probably the best studio that ive ever played. plus it was apparently upgraded. the eclipse was stock but EMGs are deff not what im looking for now i realized

Hmph. I've heard all of this EMG trashing on this board - and I played the EMG 60 in store and hated it. Bought an EC-1000 anyway, and the 60 sounded gorgeous. Not quite as good as my SD Jazz equipped guitar (same model) but still very warm* and articulate.

*hate this description for tone.
