i thought they gave like a beutifuller effect, not just Raw input on the amp but that it sounds more like the clean parts of metallica, and not like the clean parts of nirvana

If I understand the question, guitar racks are cases that are designed to hold rack mounted equipment.

A rack is just a set of rackmounted units (effects or amp or whatever). You either plug your guitar in it then rack then amp, or you can put the units in you FX loop. There are also rack mounted amps. Which you plug your guitar in, and out to the speakers.

well, sorta. there is rack gear that isn't in pedal form and vice versa.

and amps. pre-amps and power amps.

A rack is just a box with evenly spaced rails designed to hold rack mountable gear like effects processors, pre amps, power amps, compressors, etc, etc.

People just say "rack gear", or "in the rack", but that's what they mean.
