Yes, yes, my deep-seated hatred of coated strings is well-known in these parts, but I do have to pick up a set to play on my cedar-top Seagull S6. I'm taking a break from gigging for a long while and just need to have decent practice strings that I can tolerate which will hold up well.

Personally, I think 80/20 bronze sounds the best on a cedar top (smooths everything out), so I was thinking of getting the coated D'Addario EXP11 80/20 lights (or maybe the custom lights). Does anyone have any suggestions?
Sincerely, Chad.

I like Elixers. I use them on my electrics and like them. My friends use them on their acoustics and they sound good and last forever.

Elixers are out. I haven't found a set I've liked. In fact, I haven't found a set I could tolerate before ripping them off and throwing them away. I refuse to play on something that sounds so lifeless and weak, regardless of how much they cost. Maybe they've changed in the past two years, but I really doubt it. I've given them many chances, and they've let me down every time.
Sincerely, Chad.

ernie ball lasted me a year

Really? I suppose I'll have to try them again. I had given them a black mark for lack of durability when I bought them last, which was ages ago. I keep a notebook with impressions on all the strings I buy so that I remember what was crap and what wasn't.

Maybe I'll give them a try again. Has anyone tried the D'Addario EXPs?
Sincerely, Chad.

I'm going to have to chime in here.

I HATE Ernie ball strings with a burning passion. Every pack I buy goes black and dead within a week. IMO, they are only good if you are in a bind and need a set of strings to get you by (string snaps at a gig/practice, etc...)

Yeah, and I'm pretty reluctant to put them on my cedar-topped Seagull. I have written down that my impression was that they were much too warm and had practically no bright response. That's why I wanted the 80/20 strings D'Addario produces: I've always found them to be bright and clear on a cedar top, something I never get from phosphor bronze or anything else.

Edit: does anyone know of any other coated strings similar to the 80/20 formula?
Sincerely, Chad.

Well, this isn't a generic string thread. I'm specifically asking if anyone knows of any particularly bright coated strings for a cedar top guitar.

Edit: there, now it's in the subject line.
Sincerely, Chad.
