Samsung RV511 - if it's in your price range. It's what I've just bought - I like it. Seems to work admirably so far.

A battery of 5 hours? You might ant to buy multiple batteries instead.
You're asking a lot for what you're spending.

And one big big thing is, it's a lot better to buy one purely for work. Really, you will get distracted.

I have a Samsung R510; it'll do 3 hours if you really, really push it and can just play half life 2. Just.

4 gigs
2.8 ghz max or 2.0 in "economy" mode
320gb hard drive (more than you'll need); you can always buy usb HDDs
Struggles 1080p, can do 720p
HDMI (although there really isn't a need for it)

It also comes in black/red gradient colour.. which is kind of neat.

£500 new I think.. but it's an old model.
Samsungs are generally good all rounders.

why greater than 710? Usually people post the max they are willing to spend..

the thign is that i am going to be living off my laptop for 4 years and i want it to be all it can be for the price. I have 250 gig in Movies and Music alone and i plan on getting more so 500gig is needed.

A Toshiba Satellite model seems to be good as well
The HP d4mt is advertised as 6.5 hours

If your price range was a bit higher, I'd suggest a macbook pro. they'll last you over 4 years. But you'd have to save up for it.

Well this is obviously the correct answer.

OT: 1099 for the M11x r2 with the core i7 and 8GB of RAM with a 500 gig HDD. A refresh might come soon though. Save up some money and partner on it with your dad if he's paying for it.

Seriously, if you have another computer just get a laptop for work. Otherwise you will get distracted. On more than one occassion I have been too busy playing a game in a lecture to listen.

I have the Toshiba Satellite L450D-13Z, and I've gotta say - I'm damn impressed.

While mine is only the base model, the one up from mine (L450D-13x) has:
320gb HDD
2gb RAM (expandable up to 8gb)
Built in Webcam + mic
HDMI Out
15.6" Trubrite 1080p (1366x768) display with 16:9 aspect ratio.
pre-installed Win7 Home Premium x64
ATI Radeon 3200 HD graphics card.

etc etc.

For £600 I got a Dell Studio 1558.

15.6" Widescreen
500gb HD
4gb DDR3 RAM
Intel Core i5 2.3GHz
ATI Radeon HD56xx
Windows 7 Home Premium x64

It's a good laptop. I've had some problem with the battery life though. Apparently DELL is going to replace my battery. And my CPU fan stopped working, but they sent an engineer round with the parts and replaced it for free.

In an earlier post i said no refurbs. Too many variables, and its one of my dad's strict policies based on his personal experiences with refurb machines.

so he's bought one that turned out to be shit and now he's completely ruling out all options other than buying new? wow, wish I could afford to say that.
You're using UG classic, congratulations.
