I was browsing craigslist and found this:
http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/msg/2275950773.html

A 1967 Sunn Sceptre that has pretty much been rebuilt. I'm more interested in the head than the cab at the moment, and the guy offered to sell me the head for $500.

I could only find one youtube video with this amp, but it was being played with a Boss Super Distortion.

I'm only curious to see 1.) if anybody knows anything about these and 2.) Would $500 be a fair price to pay for it?

Also, I'm playing through a solid 4x12" with Celestion V30s.

That's a real blast from the past you've got there. The Sceptre was a 60-watt tube amp that was relatively popular back in the psychedelic days. If it is in good shape and you like the sound, then $500.00 is fair, but not great. It will come down to how much you want the amplifier. Getting parts for an old Sunn might not be easy, so you should consider that before you buy.

Here's a link to Sunn's 1970 catalog. The Sceptre is in there. It doesn't tell you much, though. People weren't as into specifications back then.

Get the cab also. Sunn cabs are pretty valuable.

These are wonderful amps, I would definitely get it if you need a ballsy clean amp. The price is pretty good too!

It's a primitive tube amp, finding parts for it couldn't be easier.

Well my friend and I might strike a deal where he buys the cab for $300 and I buy the head for $400, since the guy is asking $700 as a package deal. It might sound dumb, but I have an extra cab with no head and he has an extra head with no cab.. might as well have fun with it.

If I do get it, I'll definitely post a NAD here.

You won't regret it, Sunns are glorious amps!

lots of good stuff there.

more there

the sceptre is similar to other '60 watt dynakit' designs (the difference was pretty much what cab they came with). the in the later 60's they started putting reverb and tremelo onboard (unsure if the '67 sceptre has that).

the amps are monsters man. i gotta '69 1200S and it's pretty serious with an OD in front of it (even more beastly with the OD cascading into my fuzz). you may not like the stock distortion, but it takes pedals incredibly well.
punk isn't dead, it's always smelled that way.
