Okay so im new here, if i did something wrong correct me! Thanks.

So I have a Fender VG strat American and i love it. A very nice guitar. My problem is i hate being unoriginal and frankly, my guitar looks like every other sunburst strat out there. The only thing different is the extra knobs.

Im not really sure what to do with it.

I play a lot of Punk/Rock...(Just throwing that out there)

I've heard that adhesive vinyl works nicely when designing.

If you guys have any ideas or pictures of what you have done please post!
Thanks.

If you like everything about it, I would throw a new paint job on it...Punk Rock you may want a air brush guy to really Punk it out! ( Guitar is probally going to be worth more stock if it matters)

There's plenty of stuff you can do. It's a bit limited though if you want to preserve the value of the guitar. The simplest stuff like stickers and a new scratchplate, knobs etc can usually be reversed. If you don't care you can do an all out paint job on it. Airbrushed stuff is expensive but you can also get good effects just sticking on pictures or a poster like this: https://www.ultimate-guitar.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1421103&

I would not paint it, throw a sticker on there or something, nothing too crazy. if you do eventually selll it, which i would guess you might a paint job or anything you cant remove will immensely reduce the value potentially up to 50%

Im not going to paint it. At least not now.
How ever as for the value of the guitar; yes this guitar isnt made anymore but my father got the same one around the time i did so if for any reason i need to go to stock,,,,

im thinking about cutting a design out of vinyl and putting it on the pick guard. Ive always wanted it black, and i can use the white background for the design. Any ideas?

I would not either....Unless its something that helps in ways the value of the guitar is secondy. We done one air brush of Jimi for a cover band. It was a fender but they mostly wanted it for there advertising. Turn out very cool.

so you hate being unoriginal.... so youre asking people what to do to your guitar to make it original........punk? you mean green day and blink 182 right?

Make a new pickguard, put graphics on that. keep the old one in case you ever want to sell it.
Was lacking a decent sig. Still is.

who plays a strat in punk? you are original! other than that, I'd go with a blackguard looks a little tougher. adding decals, stickers, and the like is the punk thing to do, and by that logic is unpunk. Get me? play good songs with your american strat, and then you'll be the biggest punk of all. that is... unless you're a poser?

Pink Neon Strings

Haha, my friend has a Pink Neon String for in the G position and just yesterday he texted me "I broke my pink G-string " haha!

You could do what I did:
- Bought an aftermarket Pickguard
- Went nuts creatively
- Installed a new set of black Hot Gold Lace Sensors

VOILA:

you should give it a trim and and change the color.

as for the guitar, i'm not sure what you could do. new finish, different pick guard, different electronics etc.

For punk, that strat is perfect just the way it is. Haven't you ever seen cobain's strats? They looked were basic as hell, just the way they should be.

Put filtertrons in it. There's not too many similar setups, and it should still be punk-worthy.

DO NOT try and add a finish of some kind to it, you'll just make things harder for yourself.

Now that's out of the way, I would change the pickguard, maybe the tuners, and some hardware to different colors, and that's really all you can do to a strat without refinishing it.

Do something like mine...

Beat the hell out of it... Actually, buy a cheap strat knockoff for $50 on craigslist and beat the hell out of that. Like throw it across a street, slide it on pavement, shower with it, eat meals with it, and then play it after eating Doritos, Cheetos, or something similar.

You could post on UG during breaks, watch youtube videos, read up on some theory, watch porn, or any computer-related activities you enjoy. There are other options as well, such as TV, sexual intercourse, or even just take a snack and water break.

same issue i had with my bass. All i did was buy some black electirc tape and made stripes on the pick guard and head stock. I really dig the pattern, and it only cost me 57cents and 1 hr.

Just be creative and do something you like
