Alright, details: I might get a Baron DHG head, which is a two channel hand wired head that excels at high gain of American and british voicings, but doesnt have a real clean channel, so, I needs a good clean amp head

Budget: perferably less than $600 In the US
Genres: a bit of everything, but it just has to have good clear cleans with a decent amount of variety to it's sounds

Thanks

Vox AC30, or any kind of Fender or Orange would be my suggestion.

Owning both an AC30 and a Twin Reverb, I really don't like the AC30 for cleans. They never sound clean

Peavey ValveKing. Cleans are dark, and LUSH. If you like brighter more Fender like cleans, a Peavey Classic, but I don't know if they ever made a head version or not.

I have just never seen one for under like $800.

There was a silverface bassman at a local music store with the original 2x12 cab for $650 last month. Ive also seen a couple others go for under $700. Of course I do live in a hot spot for cheap used gear.

Fender Bandmaster could work also, and those can be found at reasonable prices.

they are clean, and even when they breakup its very smooth!

Do you care if it is tube or SS?

If not, used Roland JC-120. Cleanest amp you can get plus some of the best sounding analog chorus around built-in.
#16
He is just looking for a head so a Silverface Bassman would do wonders. Now whether or not it would work with the cab you are using is another issue.
#17
as said, Silverface Bassman. you can snag them for cheap.

What's wrong with the XXX listed in your sig? I've always thought the XXX/JSX had great clean channels.

thats true. The JSX clean channels are very nice.

For cleans though look in to VOX or fender. JC 120 for something cleaner. Polytone or evans if you want something as clean as clean can get.

If I were you id stick to the xxx, and save up for an evans. The head is ultra portable and cleaner than and rounder sounding than anything on the market
#21
i think jc-120 cleans are awesome, regardless of the bult in chorus or not. the head is stereo tho which may prove to be a problem with some rigs right?

if thats the case, id go for the combo if space isnt an issue
#22
A Peavey Classic 50 head would work as well, I guess. For cheaps, silverface bassman head sounds nicer to me though. Too bad I don't have a cab...

I personally found the Valveking's cleans to be pretty flat and "lifeless"...I mean, some reverb helped, but why try and polish a turd?
