The Oddysey by Symphony X is just amazing to me.

I was wondering if anybody else knows any really good 20 minute epics?

listen to jazz/fusion - only 1 song under 10 minutes in bitches brew

Miles is great, but I guess if Im not in the mood, Ill just listen to a full album like reign in blood or the wall, but length does not mean good music.

Songs 20 Minutes and Up!
Octavarium - Dream Theater
A Change of Seasons - Dream Theater
Garden of Dreams - The Flower Kings (really hard to find, but extremely well written and executed piece of music at an 59:57 long)
Monsters and Men - The Flower Kings
Supper's Ready - Genesis
Bitches Brew - Miles Davis
Thick as a Brick - Jethro Tull

Songs Not Quite 20 minutes (but close!)
Close to the Ede - Yes
The Gates of Delirium - Yes
Swim to the Moon - Between the Buried and Me
Anesthetize - Porcupine Tree

There are a lot more than this, especially from prog bands like Yes, and Dream Theater. This is a 'short' list of my favourites however.

Well, I'm sure a good deal of them just won't have the spark I'm looking for, however maybe I'll find one.

And isn't flower kings a Daniel Gildenlow thing?

They did release a single of it, which was pretty much just the first 2-3 minutes or so. However, the album had two tracks: Thick as a Brick part 1 and Thick as a Brick part 2. The only reason it was split was because eventually you'd have to turn the album over It gets a whole lot more interesting and diverse after those 3 minutes. Check it out!

He was a member for about 2 years (02'-04' according to Wiki), but the band released their first album in 94' and neither of the songs I listed feature him. I'm fairly sure he didn't write any material for them. It's really run by Roine Stolt and to a lesser extent Tomas Bodin.

Pretty sure we've had this thread many, many times.

But, for the sake of argument, I will post what I usually do in this situation.

When it comes to 20+ minute songs, all you need is Moonsorrow. Tulimyrsky, both tracks on Haevitetty are brilliant, nothing even comes close. At all.

And as far as epics close to that length go, Moonsorrow usually wins again. Kuolleiden Maa, Jotunheim...

And then... Of course, the obligatory Summoning.

and by will alone, those three songs by Bathory are... well, three separate songs, and thus do not count.

The original version of the cd had all of them as one track, and there are quiet interludes between each of the parts that lead from one part to the next

are you me in disguise?

I'd hesitate to call Those that Crush the Roots of Blood/Black Moss one song, given they are two tracks on the album, and not part of a bigger song. But on the other hand they seem to flow together seamlessly, and the last two times I saw them they played them as one, and even on the setlist they were down as 1 song in the set.

for me as well as the aforementioned, (assuming we're going of lenght as a definition for epic, rather than epic sounding)

Nitberg - Nagelreid - 56:15 (though arguably its just an album all shoved onto one track)
Wyrd - Heathen - 51:11
Ekpyrosis - Mensch Aus Gold - 31:36
Moonsorrow - Jäästä Syntynyt / Varjojen Virta - 30:10
Moonsorrow - Tulimyrsky - 29:45
Dream Theater - Octovarium - 24:00
Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Sleep - 23:18 (though arguably 3 pieces in one)
Caravan - Nine Feet Underground - 22:44
Kraftwerk - Autobahn - 22:43
Cathedral - The Voyage of the Homeless Sapien - 22:42
Finsterforst - Untergang - 21:38
Cloaca - Ghost Town - 21:30
Ghast - Terrible Cemetery - 20:27

My mistake! I had just sorted my itunes by song length and saw Thick as a Brick and then looked at the time. In retrospect I realize it was only Thick as a Brick part 1 that I looked at the time for!

No worries, I'll edit my original post.

The point of underground bands is their not popular or famous most of the time. Thus there is a good chance they suck.

King Crimson's Devils Triangle is another awesome one. Not 20 minutes but still pretty epic. They obviously have some other great epic songs too.

+1 to Rush, Jethro Tull, and Sleep

King Crimson - Starless might possibly be my favorite song of all time. It's only 12 minutes, so it's on the shorter side for an epic, but god DAMN is it good.

Keeping it metal, Back to Times of Splendor by Disillusion is probably top of the list for me. There's a bunch of Opeth songs that could qualify, but I don't really count them because long songs are the norm for them.

And, of course, there's Light of Day, Day of Darkness. I don't care what the haters say, I think the high-pitched female vocals a little past the halfway mark fit the song just fine and work very well as a build-up. I'm more bothered by the randomly-placed Middle Eastern section near the end.

Jerusalem is an inferior version of Dopesmoker and thus not worth mentioning.

Otherwise, spot on.

Also:
Monster Magnet - Tab... 25
Earth - Like Gold and Faceted (just get the whole of Earth 2, for that matter)
Melvins/Joe Preston - Hands First Flower (it's like an earlier version of said album)
Boris - Flood
Om - On the Mountain at Dawn (again, Variations on a Theme as a whole...)
Reverend Bizarre - Cirith Ungol

And for something that you'd probably recognise more easily as "epic" since it's in the vein of one of them "tack a couple of songs together and call it a day" thingies, try Cathedral - The Garden and Edge of Sanity's Crimson I and II.

Oh, and I concur with the GY!BE mention.
If I took this cigarette and put it out on you...

Agalloch - In the Shadow of our Pale companion, Black Lake Nidstang, Scars of the Shattered Sky, and if we're including songs that are broken into parts then I'd also Say Our Fortress is Burning and She Painted Fire Across the Skyline
G!YBE - East Hastings and Providence
Rush - 2112
Nevermore - This Godless Endeavor (only 8 mins I know, but still feels so damn epic)
Cormorant - Hanging Gardens
Iron Maiden - Rime of the Ancient Mariner
Pink Floyd - Echoes

Bathory - Twilight of the Gods

If you don't like this, you just flat out don't like epic music, since this is a perfect example on how to do it right. Huge, crushing and beautiful.

Manowar - Achilles: Agony and Ecstasy in Eight Parts

Minus the bass and drum solo sections, this song is ****ing brilliant. The vocal solo's especially stand out as being incredible at setting the atmosphere of the song.

Atlantean Kodex - The Prophet In the Forest

From the Tolkein inspired lyrics down to the massive riffs, this song defines the epic in my opinion. The outro on the demo version especially can only be described as majestic and HUGE.
