Hey guy's,

Been meaning to post this thread up for a few weeks now. I recently purchased an explorer guitar kit online here in Aus from a site called guitarworx.com.au, pretty good quality for a reasonably cheap price.

everything is supplied, cept for a neck plate as its meant to be glue in, but will be making it a screw type so i can adjust hieghts etc upon final assembly.

After i predrilled all the holes etc, i applied for initial stain coat and painted the headstock.

drying in the jam room as its shit weather atm.

playing with logo ideas. gibson custom.

my etched backplate that i orderd from the states.

so far im nearly done with staining, still have to do another sand and possible third coat of stain though before i put the final clear over it.

im really enjoying building this, its giving me a chance to know exactly how to set up a guitar for my playing style.

anyway, watch this space and hope you guys like it.

Looks pretty good.
One thing that I don't like is the amount of different pieces of wood in the body. I see six or seven in there.

Pinup girls are always awesome on guitars. Although they do suit Teles and Strats more.
You may want to change the pickups in the guitar as majority of kits come with shit pickups outsourced in China or some other foreign country with cheap labour.
I've always been a fan of Explorers.

#4
huh, might buy one of these just for the fun of it.
but yeah as timbit said, definetly upgrade the pickups. thats probably the main reason its so cheap. still looks good so far personally, i wouldnt put a gibson custom logo on. if you want a gibson, you buy a gibson. think up something thats unique to your guitar, because youuuu built it.

and timbit, if you painted over it you wouldnt notice it at all lol.
#5
Looks like it has potential, but follow the advice already given...

Where did you find the neck plate?
#6
cheers guys,

yer i will be upgrading the pickups once its finished and adjusted, and can afford some emgs.

The body is Basswood, along with the neck and a rosewood fretboard, ive put a second layer of stain on it recently and its come up looking really good, cant see the different shades of timber at all which is good, ill get some pictures up within a few days.

As for the neck plate, i found that on ebay (USA) as the only ones i could find in aus where chrome or gold.

headstock; im just playing with ideas atm, ill work something out no doubt.

There's a website that sells stuff like that. I think it's called pinupparts.com or something like that. I personally wouldn't buy from there because I hear their customer service and service in general is shit.

this looks like the same offered at guitarfetish.
measure before you set the neck. When they drill the bridge holes they didnt add 1/8" for compensation. I learned this the hard way with my kit and now i have to plug the holes and redrill

come again?? can you explain this in alil more detail, what are we allowing 3.175mm for?

i dont know if you did it on purpose or not, but your pickups/ pickup rings are facing the wrong way.

yer placement was just for the photo.

Compensation. When you measure for intonation, you need to add 1/8" to compensate for when you push the string down.

You sure that's meant to be a bolt on neck joint? Looks like it was more meant to be a set to me.
Basses:
Fender Precision Bass
Fender Jazz Bass
1967 Fender Coronado Bass II
Warwick Star Bass
Squier Precision Bass TB

it is meant to be a set neck, but tbh, im not confident enough to do a set neck, at least i can adjust the neck if i need to once its complete and together with a bolt on.

cheers, its little things like this that im learning everyday, so your saying the holes that are predrilled are infact wrong?

they're not necessarily wrong you just want to measure before hand

Have a look at this: http://www.stewmac.com/FretCalculator If you put in your specs down the bottom it says where your bridge should be depending on what type of bridge it is. Hardtails have less give than trems so they need to be adjusted differently. It should help you check where you want it.

The first four images in the second post are big red X's.

Looks good so far!

yer, same thoughts here man, its all in the finish, i was addement that it had to be done properly and to my picky standards otherwise i wouldnt be as proud of it, considering the wiring etc can be done in a day/weekend and the finish has taken me a good 2.5 months to get to the final stage i think its come out pretty nice.

I think you might have problems at the neck pocket. By the look at how much wood was removed,It doesn't leave much there for a bolt on application.
#23
^The neck does have a rather long tongue on the tenon, so I think it'll work alright.
#24
the top two screws will go in fine, they are the normal type neck screw:

ive sourced two other screws that have the thread all the way to the top of the screw but are smaller so that it still secures the tongue but doesnt protrude into the pickup cavity...hopefully.

I wet sanded between each coat of clear, once the final coat was applied and dry i just buffed it, once its complete i will apply guitar polish and give a good run with some elbow grease.

Then don't forget to drill the body holes for those screws oversized so the threads can't grip the body. If they do that then they'll do a shitty job.

well, after a weekend of tinkering, soldering, drilling, swearing and cursing myself for starting this project im proud to say that its nearly complete, neck is bolted on, electronics work.

I copied my SG wiring as it uses the smae 2 pot - 3way switch setup, was very handy to have something to refer back too.

Im contemplating making a pick gaurd, my mate has alot of 1mm thick polished stainless checkerplate, so im going to get him to cut this out and see how it looks before i put it on:

and here it is sitting in the jam room next to my SG.

I still have alot of little things to do, setting the intonation of the neck, filing the nut to seat the strings properly, i have to clean the neck as there is some glue from the tape i used to mask when painting. give it a buff and polish and restring with my preferred strings; elexirs.
