Hmm, $400 budget. Would you want a tube amp or a digital modeler?

For a digital modeler, I would suggest one of the Peavey Vypyr series, either the 75w straight solid state or if you can find a used one/save $50 more, a 60w tube one.

Tube 60 Vypyr: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Peavey-VYPYR-Tube-60-60W-1x12-Guitar-Combo-Amp-104922893-i1413609.gc

Solid State Vypyr 75: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Peavey-Vypyr-75-75W-1x12-Guitar-Combo-Amp-104922877-i1413607.gc

I haven't tried the following myself, but if I had a budget around $400 I would highly consider this.

You won't get sparkling cleans, but they should be pretty good if you roll down your guitars volume. See if you can try one out, along with a vypyr, at a local music store.

Would you be playing a band, or just by yourself for now?

Better amp.

do you want head/cab or a combo?

also where are you in the world?

what genre of music do you play?

we have so far you want an amp with a budget of $400... that's not gonna get us far.

Wait about a month or two and pick up the jca22 that's going to replace that one. It has an fx loop as well as two channels. I would strongly recommend that one.

i prefer combo amps, im from the philippines, i play progressive rock and alternative rock, i know $400 isnt a lot cause it'll be for jamming and maybe gigs if i dont like the amp.

I would recommend waiting for that too, I was just about to post that.

Another option is a Peavey Valveking 212, although people complain about the iffy speakers, it sounds pretty good for the price to me.

There's a cheap one on ebay right there.

I'm not sure if a 20w Jet City head would cut it in a band situation, I know that a 20w is LOUD, but it really depends on your drummer whether it can keep up. If you want more cleany cleans, I would definitely get something that is 40w + or so.

If you are in the market for really, really wanting and needing a new amp then save up a little extra money and buy an amp that you will not want to get rid of. A decent/good tube amp can be had for $500-700, granted that is a little more but the wait will make you appreciate the overall value of the amp. The Peavey Valveking is a great tube amp for the price, I would highly recommend it, not to mention it fits your budget. I personally stay away from solid state because I don't get the sound that I want out of them, and I would be willing to bet that most people would agree that if money were not an option then tube would be the way to go. I would not spend 400 on something you might want to get rid of later. IMHO.

Just know that no matter what you ask, everyone on UG forums always says buy a new amp.
