Hello people of Guitar Techniques.

I haven't played guitar properly for a long time (I still pick up and have a noodle around most days, but nothing much).

Today I realised that my ring finger is struggling. It appears to have developed a mind of it's own and is quite weak.

Does anyone have any suggestions of patterns/licks I can practise to build up the strength and dexterity of my ring finger (and obviously help the others as well)?

I use a simple excerise to help gain strength in my pinky and ring fingers.

2 different exercises, Not played together.

1.

7 5 3 1
P R M I

2.

8 5 1 5
P R I R

Play them backwards also on different strings.

Trills are probably your best bet. You could also try learning some tricky jazz chords to work your fingers out in general.

All it is,

7 - 5 - 3 - 1
I M R P

go up and down on each string

Once your happy with that

8 - 5 - 1 - 5
P R I R

^ this will be very uncomfortable (8-5) If you jump a little bit, you will still feel your fingers getting stronger.

do this.

tricky at first and very simple but works well (for me neway).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but are you saying that you can stretch from 1 to 8? If you are, pics or GTFO. And also your first one should be P R M I, not the other way around.

Junior's usually at least a little terse, but he knows his stuff. I've always read his posts in a grouchy grandfather voice, a grouchy grandfather with a huge stiffy for alternate picking.
Besides that, he's right this time. As usual.

1 to 8 is a pretty monster stretch... I can barely do 1 to 6 these days

the only stretch that I can play comfortably maxed out is 1-7. 1-8 is very painful and ddifficult for me, but i'm able to. I just dont like to try that much. haha

you're not gonna want to take a dump in a gross, off-colored, vintage toilet. you want something that is white and pearly; something that shines. something that you can put your cheeks against and say, "f*** yeah"

Once you've done a bit of work, the ring finger is the weakest finger - my favourite thing for it is Paul Gilberts "11 note lick" - but basically, just use it lots.

I have medium sized hands and I can do 1-7, 1-8 isn't crazy talk...

No lol.

No way could i stretch from 1 to 8 LOL.

The two exercises are not played together.

The 2nd one is good. for 'separating' the ring finger and pinky.

^ I've got to say, you've really made a hash of explaining exactly what you're recommending.
