I really love those sort of creepy, eerie guitar riffs yet what makes them stand out is they also have a really nice groove to them.

What's at work here from a theoretical standpoint?

Dissonance plays a big role, I think.. something with Tritones. I tried playing around with having the bass play an E, for example, and then improvising from F or Eb.. Those lines became very unnerving to say at least
