Sorry about another pickup thread!
I'm looking for humbucker to put in my strats bridge, but i dunno whether or not to go active or passive. I've looked at some different EMG's (the 81 looks good to me) but not much else tbh!
I'm not doing any br00talz stuff, but wouldn't mind a nice bit of gain!
Any suggestions ?

Budget is about £90

Well you gotta make the choice of putting a battery into your guitar or not. Active pickups require an external power source to work so you always have to be conscious of your batteries life or if there is room to store a batter inside your guitar. EMG 81/85 is a common combo for metal and heavy stuff as is EMG 81/60, the EMG H4 is the passive version of the 81/85 and is good if you dont want to go active.

If you're not doing br00talz, why add the headache of actives? There are plenty of hot hot hot passive humbuckers for you to choose from, especially if you look at others beyond EMG.

The DiMarzio D-Activator is a passive pickup that models active tone, if thats what you want.

What tones are you trying to get exactly (bands/songs)? What amp are you playing through? That stuff will help us a lot in recommending pickups to you.

Well, if you don't know what you want, don't buy anything. Play your amp(s) and if you ever think your tone needs changes that can't be achieved by tweaking the controls of your amp(s) and guitar(s), we can talk about pups. But as long as you don't have any clear ideas about the sound you want, we can't help you much really.

haha well i just want something a little clearer. I'm playing an epi les paul custom and it's just a bit mudy tbh. Wouldnt mind something a little more defined with a bit more gain. But that'll all i can really say haha :/ if i find something i like im gonna buy two, and put one in my strat too

Honestly,

He want's "a bit of gain" and "more defined" and you recommend two low output pickups with Alnico 2 magnets? Granted the PG is "vintage hot" and does have a bit of sizzle about it but the Alnico Pro II is just the wrong call.

TS, a big part of what's going to be right is the music you're playing, so give us an idea of the tones you're after.
