Hey guys, haven't posted in quite a while, and this post might even be a little inappropriate given the type of conversation typically designated to the forum, but I was wondering about scenes in the midwest united states.

The midwest is producing some great bands for hardcore/post-hardcore/indie/pop-punk, but they seem to be few and far between with little focus on one area. Anybody got anything from their hometown or surrounding areas? Maybe post some bands and venues from your area.

EDIT: Not trying to be restrictive. Talk about your scene WHEREVER you're from!

It would be sweet to be able to build kind of an encyclopedia of who to get in touch with/bands to try to set stuff up with. My band is looking to play some shows outside of our area but we don't really know where to start. I'm from Columbia, Missouri. We have a pretty decent little scene going on but everyone is kind of clueless on the surrounding areas. Kansas City/Lawrence SEEM to be over it and I haven't heard of anything coming out of St. Louis for a while. Am I wrong? Does anyone know? What about Omaha or Des Moines?

Again, might be kind of weird for this forum. I also have no idea the amount of people who lurk here that would even know where any of these places are/have decent knowledge about a scene. If this dies oh well, no harm done. But if it grows I think it could be a pretty sweet resource.

I'll start:

Hometown: Columbia, MO
Scene: Mostly post-hardcore/hardcore, but super welcoming of all kinds of stuff.

Bands
Wolfmouth (hardcore) - http://www.facebook.com/wolfmouthmo
Canyons (hardcore, Louisville inspired) - http://www.facebook.com/pages/CANYONS/299760583383
Foreign Theaters (hardcore, Louisville inspired) - http://www.myspace.com/foreigntheaters
The Royalist (Post-hardcore, must admit, my band) -http://www.facebook.com/TheRoyalistMO

Venues
Sideshow - http://www.facebook.com/partyatsideshow

Depending on the local/size of your band, these shows can draw pretty darn well. If you play at Sideshow you can expect to get gas money at the VERY least. People in Missouri are also very welcoming and super nice. Bands are constantly telling us how nice everyone is here.

Does this make sense? Tell me about your scene!

I think the one place we don't have any regs from is the Midwest United States.

Except for that one 16 year old who lives in Chicago...

Yeah I didn't really know what to expect. I haven't been a regular here for years. I peep around every now and then but not enough to know who really posts. Oh well...

Isn't LHP Andrew from Kansas? Is Kansas part of the Midwest? He plays a lot of shows.
I'm an asshole.

Dirty punk, ska-punk. We had a pretty alive and kicking deathcore-y-ish scene with a lot of shit bands, but it's mostly dead.

We have one good hardcore band that I'm friends with. Music is the Enemy. Check them out.

^^^ Cool I for sure will!

Ha, you're in The Royalist? I've seen you guys twice. Not gonna lie, you seemed like you had improved a lot the second time. Both times were with Such Gold if I remember right.

Ah thanks a lot man! Yeah we played with Such Gold the two times they've been here at Aaron's place. That's a great place to play shows too.

I would have included Aaron and a lot of the other traditional hardcore bands from around here but they all seem to be defunct. Landlocked was amazin but I'm pretty sure they're done as half their members quit. Nothing to Nothing is an excellent hardcore band as well but I haven't heard about a show of theirs in a super long time. The guys in those bands get some great hardcore shows going in Columbia, though. We're really fortunate that they bring the amount that they bring. I just wish I knew about more communities like that so we could reach out a bit. What's your name man? You in a band or anything? You go to school here?

Yeah for sure. I would actually love to play guitar for that band but I dont think I could keep up. They do a lot of really cool stuff that I just can't do because of school. They toured in Europe that's how they met Evan from Into It. Over It./Stay Ahead of the Weather. I'm pretty sure that's how we got those shows in the first place.

I like the idea of this thread, though I am in Ontario, rather far from the midwest.
And we don't have any kinda scene I'd be proud of.
Ohai.

Actually from Canada.

I am a lurking reg, and I live in Minnesota.
Central Minnesota:
High Hopes: http://www.myspace.com/highhopestc (hardcore/metal, really good stuff)
In Defence: http://www.myspace.com/indefence (hardcore/thrash)
An Aeon Awakening: http://www.myspace.com/anaeonawakening (meh deathcore... brother's old band)
Omari: http://www.myspace.com/omarihardcore (melodic metalcore)
Hands: http://www.myspace.com/wearehands (ambient/hardcore/metal something)
The Suit: http://www.myspace.com/thesuitmusic (hardcore/metal.../party?)
Your Memorial: http://www.myspace.com/yourmemorial (metalcore)
Venia: http://www.myspace.com/veniamusic (hardcore/metal... really like these guys also)
Most of the bands in my "scene" are Christian bands and most of these are no exception, but I picked the ones that I thought made some alright music. I know this forum isn't the biggest on religion in music, but at face value some of these bands have talent.

If you've got a real metalcore song that you want tabbed, let me know. I'll see what I can do.

I'm not from the midwest but I'm going to talk about the scene around me anyways.

It's all Christian nu-metalcore stuff.

Meh, why not. I'm not even on the same continent, but whatever. Here are some hardcore (and other genres related in some way to hardcore) bands from Aberdeen which I enjoy.

Grader (FFO: Have Heart, Verse, Killing The Dream etc)
Prelude To The Hunt (FFO: Cursed, Converge, Pulling Teeth etc)
Hounds (FFO: Transit, In Bear Country, Daggermouth etc - this is the only "recording" so far)
Shiner (FFO: More Than Life, Have Heart, Miles Away etc)
The Carrion (FFO: A Textbook Tragedy, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Johnny Truant etc)
Carson Wells (FFO: Algernon Cadwallader, Cap'n Jazz, Merchant Ships etc)
Cavalcades (I'm definitely not in this band)
My name is Danny. Call me that.

I'm not even a reg on this part of the forum. If you're talking about me.

There's a bunch of bands I could post, but I don't feel like compiling links.

Laziness is the finest trait of the Midwest music scene.

Sarasota/Tampa is cool if you're into shitty deathcore, bands that sound like Abandon All Ships, hordes of scene *****s or straight edge bros who beat up everyone who comes within 10 feet of them in a pit.

So it seems Florida and Arizona have some things in common...it's where old people and music go to die...

It's because we're the best.

It's actually true. I really wish I lived there. I would love to play some shows up there but it's such a drive for us (about 6 hours.) For us to make any kind of impact we'd have to run up there pretty regularly and we can't really afford it.

If you don't really care to it's no big deal but it would actually be pretty sweet if you just threw out a couple names who might be willing to slap some shit together. No biggie if not though. We played with a band called Thieves from up there a couple of weeks ago. We also had a show with Into It. Over It. and I'm pretty sure he/Stay Ahead of the Weather are Chicago-based at the moment. I'm not really sure who else is up there though. I think Native is pretty close, right? Close as in as close as possible to Illinois while living in Indiana lolol

Yeah pretty much. The kid who lives down my street's band is touring with Becoming the Archetype soon, but the kid's band honestly isn't too good lol.

There's a bunch of grindcore bands that love playing shows because it normally means they get free food, and a bunch of houses/bars/apartments that host regular shows that'll book whoever.

All the bands you mentioned are from here, Native just hangs out here because Indiana sucks. Also, in the suburbs in places like Elgin, or Barrington, there's a lot of local venues. How's St. Louis in terms of shows and stuff?
#25
Houston Texas, a bunch of bad crabcore rockstar wannabe's then too many kids with basketball shorts and flat bill caps.
#26
Albany, Georgia.

Famous artists from here: Ray Charles, With Blood Comes Cleansing, Travis Richter(The Human Abstract, The Color of Violence, From First To Last)

Let's just say that my town is a flash in the pan when it comes to talent.

I'm gonna spare you guys the pain of listening to this crap. All I can say is that 9.5/10 bands formed around here sound like they want to be a true hardcore band, but fail oh so miserably. Think The Ghost Inside and MyChildren MyBride. They water down these guy's already watered down version of metalcore/hardcore.

Really the only band worth listening to around my parts was a band called The Variant I suggest you all give them a whirl. They used to sound a lot more rooted in metalcore, but were more of a prog-post hardcore sound on their first full length. Seriously check out that link though, great music.

That reminds me, 1000 wannabe For The Fallen Dreams bands, just more watered down bands imitating already watered down music like you said.

Because Cinemechanica is from there. Interesting mathy post-hardcore for those who don't know who they are.

Not really lol. It's about 3 hours South of it.

Pop Punk & Emo

All the new shit is a little bit more tinged with hardcore(ish) shtuff, but our album coming out is definitely more pop punk than anything else.

The only one hardcore where I live that I know of is

3 Inches of Blood

A Textbook Tragedy:

and myself; Galactic Pegasus:
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Galactic-Pegasus/202513679771659?sk=app_2405167945

/end self advertising :p

Most people just listen to Dub-step/pop/rap :/

Im also nowhere near the Midwest so I dont know why I even posted this

Most kids here listen to Alexisonfire because they're the most famous/well known hardcore(?) band from Canada. I rarely see people wear any sort of band T-shirts, occasionally a couple of TDWP tee's but that's about it. When Warped Tour comes htough there seem to be so many scene kids that I have no idea where they are coming from

I haven't lived in the area for too long, but some bands tour here. Lemuria played at Transitions a few months ago.

Orlando has some good stuff.

In Houston we have a bunch of kids who wear Suicide Silence shirts everywhere and think they know what hardcore dancing is. If it's a "-core" show, there will be too many fights, and if it's a metal show, there will be a bunch of kids standing with their arms folded until the headliner comes on. There is at least one kid at every show with a Have Heart shirt on.

At least, that's what I've seen.

As far as bands go, we have ZZ Top.

Oh, and this Christian deathcore band called Before There Was Rosalyn that got signed to Victory. They kinda suck.

Man, tell me about it

I checked them out because back in 2009 Molotov Solution was on tour and one of their tour stops was at BTWR's record release show.

I listened to a song or two and decided that I would leave right after MS got done.
