For you people who live in the United Kingdom, why does your country sometimes go by Great Britain? My geography teacher says that when at war, it is Great Britain for intimidation. I dont think thats right. Sounds dumb.

It doesn't?

Great Britain in the island consisting of England, Wales and Scotland.

The United Kingdom is Great Britain, Northern Ireland, the Channel islands, the Falklands and the rest of the islands we own.

Not quite, the UK only refers to Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Places such as the Falklands are generally called Overseas Territories.

The United Kingdom is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland

Great Britain has England, Scotland, and Wales

England is within Great Britain.

Now slap the **** out of your teacher for me. Seriously.

Quite the opposite. The UK is only GB and NI, the clue is in its full name. The rest of those islands are Overseas Territories. Geez, how hard is it people!

edit: don't dare get pedantic on my ass and say that the channel islands + isle of man are Crown Dependencies. I know. wikipedia has just informed me

And the British Isles are something different again. This is what happens when you have a country with a really screwed up history.

I was about to say.

BTW, GB doesn't have all of Scotland, as there's lots of islands like Barra, Arran, Iona, Skye, and the Orkneys which are all Scotland, but not Britain, but are in the UK.
The UG Awards exist only to instill me with existential doubt.

No, they're part of the nation of Scotland, just not part of the island of Britain.

They aren't, they're normal UK which I neglected to mention I guess. There's also the Isle of Wight and Anglesea and whatever other random islands are in England Wales and NI. And what about islands in a lake or river, are they technically not in GB?

Your teacher is a retard. Great britian is a geographical term coming from Great britanina
After the Old English period, Britain was used as a historical term only. Geoffrey of Monmouth in his pseudohistorical Historia Regum Britanniae (c. 1136) refers to the island of Great Britain as Britannia major ("Greater Britain"), to distinguish it from Britannia minor ("Lesser Britain"), the continental region which approximates to modern Brittany. The term "Great Britain" was first used officially in 1474, in the instrument drawing up the proposal for a marriage between Cecily the daughter of Edward IV of England, and James the son of James III of Scotland, which described it as "this Nobill Isle, callit Gret Britanee." It was used again in 1604, when King James VI and I, in a deliberate attempt to impose a term which would unite his double inheritance of the kingdoms of Scotland and England, proclaimed his assumption of the throne in the style "King of Great Britain, France, and Ireland
