I was using light gauge strings (stock strings on the guitar) and switched to Heavy-Medium strings, 10 14 18 32 44 56. If you play stuff like Killswitch / Bodom and wonder why yours doesn't sound as good as them, try nice and thick strings

And string thickness is all personal opinion. Some people might light their strings a little floppier.
If you think you don't sound as good as the bands you're listening to, check up on your technique and trade in your Spider or MG.
