So, I was wondering what your personal approaches were to writing free verse songs (ones without any particular rhyme scheme or syllabic meter). Every time I go out and write, at least when knowing it's going to be for a song, I end up using a rhyme scheme and I'm starting to piss myself off.

What ways or observations do you make when you guys write songs without rhyme schemes?

You'll want to rhyme some of the lines - it helps connect two lines you want to stand out. Internal rhymes (rhyming two words in one line) are always effective. Try reading some of the poet Robert Lowell's work; he was very good at making free verse make sense.
