Im installing a Hot Rail in the bridge and was wondering whether you need to take all the solder off the pot to make the new connection or if you can solder the new pickup into the solder already on the back of the pot?
thanks

You can reuse the solder. Just make sure your connection is solid when done.

Most of the bad solder joints I've seen happen because people tried to reuse the solder thats already there. You can do it, but it's better to clean the pot and resolder.

I see this a lot. It's not too bad to re-use solder from the factory. If the connections are nice and solder is shiny, it will most likely be re-usable.

But if it's someone else's poor soldering job, or if the solder is dark grey and not shiny, chances are it won't work

Just to be on the safe side, clean the pot and start fresh
