when transcribing i use my pod xt live so I can hear my guitar through the computer along with the song I'm transcribing so i can put what i think is the chord over the chord and can tell if its correct... is that like a "easy" way?

No it's perfectly fine.
There's a good chance that what I've written above is useless and if you take any of the advice it's your own fault.

Who cares if its' easy.... it gets the job done, and thats the point of doing it.
Try not to get caught in the "it's easy" or "that's cheating" trap. People get hung up on that crap and it holds them back.

and yeah, if you're figuring out songs by ear and are able to play them well........... it's helping you.
shred is gaudy music

That's how I usually do it, except with an acoustic guitar and youtube but you catch the drift.

I support Munky's "if it works, who gives a crap" philosophy.
And no, Guitar Hero will not help. Even on expert. Really.
