Your iPhone is storing all your location data on the phone, just FYI

It's not news that cell phones track you and store your location data SOMEWHERE. That place used to be servers that people can't get to, where the data was only legally accessible via a court order. But, buried in iOS 4, and this is something no one was told about, all that information is now stored on the device itself where anyone who can get their hands on it--or hack their way into its storage, which I'm assuming would be easier than AT&T/Verizon servers--can now see where you've been, in stunningly detailed latitudes and longitudes.

You might be interested in turning that little feature off. The bottom of the article tells you how.

Why does it matter? the network stores all that stuff anyway.

It's a lot easier to get data out of a phone than out of the network.

The iPhone gets internet too. So if I had one and someone was looking at my data, the locations I've been would be the least damning things they'd find.

Besides, you're forgetting the upside here: if it gets stolen you will know precisely where it is.

Well, that depends who is taking the data and why I suppose.

This is why I don't have an iphone

The issue is that they're storing that info in an insecure location, ya friggin jerk

To be honest, I wouldn't really care. I would have lost my iPhone and that would matter more to me than some people knowing where I've been.

so you wouldn't care if less than honest people knew where you lived and worked?

you can't see the problem with that?

That info is really easy to find anyway. You can get a background check online of anyone you want for like $40.

Besides, that information would only be useful if someone wanted to personally target you. If you want to kill someone in cold blood or rob a house, why would you go through all the trouble of hacking an iPhone when you could just pick a random house/person?

How is this actually any different to other smartphones, thinking about it?

people are only making a fuss because it's an apple product. Any phone with voice-guided GPS will save your locations in it that you navigate to.

It's not even a case of hacking an iphone. It's unencrypted data, it's there to read, plain as day.

can I ask why people don't post their addresses online?

why target a random house that could have **** all in it when there's a house whose occupants can afford to waste spend their money on something like an iPhone?

And that's just taking the crime issue into consideration, what about your privacy from your parents or from an ex gf/bf?

Do none of you care that apple has implemented a feature that doesn't ask for your permission to log your location?

this is done without permission and as far as anyone can tell it doesn't serve a purpose.

nobody cares about

My parents and ex girlfriends all know where I live. And most burglars tend to case a house for awhile before they rob it. They'd know whether I have anything of value anyway.

google accidentally steals a few peoples publicly open wifi,
they internally realize the error happened and tell the public to inform them of the accident

Everyone freaks out, skynet google, and they get sued by the EU for privacy concerns.

Apple, without telling anybody, decides its appropriate to code into iOS to track the user, everywhere they go, at all times, in an easily attainable file.
That was discovered by researchers, not the company, and told to the public.

Ehn i dont care, what they gonna do with it anyway

oh the hypocrisy of stuff regarding apple

I just don't get how that information could be that harmful. Like I said, $40 background check and you know everything you'd need on that person. On the other hand, if your iPhone gets stolen, you know where it is.

I do care about this, but it seems people are mostly over reacting. If you have an iphone I am willing to bet you use some of the geotagging app features anyway.
