I've just been watching the Sopranos and I'm just curious as to why central and south Americans are consider Latin American or Latino/Latina, I mean wouldn't Italians be the Latins as Rome is actually in Italy and they would probably be the ones who are descended from the Romans?

People sometimes call Romance languages (Italian, Latin, Portuguese, Spanish etc) Latin languages. It stemmed from that I expect.

I know they're latin languages, but doesn't this make the French and Italians Latin too?

I don't know, Italians are kind of stereotyped for shoving their heritage in your face over here. I mean watch Jersey Shore or New Jersey Housewives.

Italy, Spain, Portugal and France are latin countries since the roman empire conquered them (not Italy of course), the latin language was imposed to the people in those countries, when the spanish and portuguese conquered most parts of america they did the same with the indians, since they now speak a language which derived from latin they are called latin-americans or hispanic-americans (for the ones who speak only spanish)

Well no, because their culture wasn't forced imperialism so they have always been that way, also it's not fashionable to use the term 'latin' any more, they are more commonly now known as Romance languages.

I mean, technically you're right, they just don't have the same name

Isn't that debatable? I mean the French were barbarians before the Romans conquered them and forced their language on them. It's just further back.

Just because the Celts were more kickass than the French doesn't mean the French weren't conquered.

Yeah, but the Celts weren't barbarians, we did fine

Except for the Roman thing.

And then letting in 2 tricking Saxon kings who turned out to invade.

Then letting the vikings in.

Then that whole French invasion.

Yeah.

I know that, which is why calling the French and the Celts Barbarians is accurate, it was because their languages sounded like barb barb barb barb barbarann, to them.

Because they were brought over from Africa and they live in America?

Makes you white in my eyes. If I go to spain it's full of white people than just happened to be tanned.

Seems to be an American thing to class them as hispanics. Maybe it's just me, perhaps some other Europeans could correct me on this?

I've never heard anyone referred to as Hispanic outside of the character design UI in Fallout 3 and porn titles.

Hispanic = latin. I just dont think its fair that blacks are african american but we have a completely different names for latins and such. Makes so sense.

Because Spaniards aren't generally big fat racists, when the Spanish and Portuguese colonised South America they interbred with the natives rather than murdering them all like our backwards neighbours across the pond did.

So "latinos" in America are actually a different ethnic group to people from Spain.
