You mean how he could look at it? He had vnc installed. So he could look at what was happening on the computer over the internet.

Other than that I didn't understand a lot of what he was saying on the technical side, but this was brilliant!

the guy (the robber) could log into the computer without a pw ---> he didn't had to reinstall stuff (this is the luck part of the story for the original owner)

the original owner got SSH and VNC "turned on" his stolen computer, so he used normal built in services to "get into" the computer.

this is not a case of hacking, it was just luck. also the guy who stole the computer were incredibly dumb.

That is pretty awesome, but as he said if he didn't make a few security mistakes himself he would never have gotten it back.

I have a question, though, was it ever proven that the guy who he found was the guy who stole his computer in the first place, or did he just buy it off of the thief? Cause it seems odd to me that the thief would keep a computer that was severely limited with the usability due to the security restrictions and not wipe the hard-drive or try to fix it. Also, he apparently only used his computer for emails and taking photos, so why did he not sell the much more valuable, professional-tier computer and buy one more suitable for his needs for less money?

^ thats true

people usually try and shift stolen goods ASAP. Also, Apple's MobileMe would mean that you shouldn't recommend a Mac to a network if it has MobileMe installed until it's been formatted.

it's pretty easy to break into a Mac using the pre-boot terminal. I've had to do it a couple times for customers. Make a new admin account from there.

That's awesome. It's not really hacking, per say, but I have to give him credit for his resourcefulness and persistence. Brilliance, really.

I'm just left wondering one thing; did he have keylogger and vnc installed before or after his machine was stolen? That wasn't particularly clear.

Edit: Ah, okay, he had keylogger and vnc already on there. And it was set to boot to single-user mode. For a hacker, he certainly didn't seem to take great measures on his system against vulnerability to hackers. >_>

Complete pwnage However, I would've given the guy hell before calling the cops.

Also, as CoreysMonster pointed out, has it been proven that Guzman was the actual thief?

I think the computer voice trick was the best. I can only imagine that guy's reaction to his computer suddenly talking to him.

Edit: Yeah I was thinking that too. He didn't seem smart enough to successfully break in and steal a computer and multiple harddrives.

I don't think so. Considering the computer wasn't online for 2 years and that it went from Boston to Las Vegas it's pretty safe to say Guzman wasn't the thief.

You'd be pretty dumb to buy a computer so obviously stolen due to all the security restrictions.

Admittedly this guy doesn't seem like the brightest though.
#35
lol, awesome. However, aren't some of the things he did to find the computer illegal?

Also, doesn't matter if he stole the computer or not, it's still a felony to be in possession of stolen goods.

yeah but the fact that he left his system vulnerable made it so he could remotely access his own computer with ease, and the guy could use it in the first place, or his hilarious self shoots and dating site info wouldn't be on there for him to read.

guy steals his computer

uses DynDNS to find it's IP

pings it

SSH and VNCs it

steals his pics, address, gmail address, etc

gives it to the cops

gets his computer back

??????

profit.

it's not quite as funny without his geekily explicit outbursts, talk of keychains, etc.
