Your Android handset is storing all your location data on the phone, just FYI

Taking a break from work - fuck my ass, but what's the first stumble I come across?

And just days after iPhone users found out their location data was stored on their phones

Goddamn iFags will never let us live this down

Not really that surprising in hindsight, given google's predilection for collecting user data

You do realize that people were easily tracked to pinpoint locations by government officials before the iPhone was popular, right?

Got a TV? Cable corporations store information and data on what you watch, when you watch it, and for how long it's being watched. Go to a grocery store and pay with a credit card? Those companies know what you buy every time you buy it, and along with your 'value card' build a painfully accurate picture of what the general consumer prefers in order to balance and inflate prices based on this data. Do you have a car? Computers in your car's dash and machinery track how far you go, how long you drive, your average gas consumption, how fast you generally go, and the condition of your vehicle's parts. On a computer? Search providers store everything you type into a search bar, your history stores your data on the HD even after you delete cookies and history, and every post you make in every forum is stored on the servers and internet for any to view.

Do you have a friend? Chances are they know your habits and preferences already. Your family knows even more about you. Do you have a job? Your boss watches and monitors everything you do while at work, and so do your co-workers. Some people think that voting isn't actually a functional process for electing a president, but rather a way for the government to find out what the majority wants and thinks, then more easily find ways to cater to and control them via that information.

Ever done a job interview? Your resume containing all of your personal information is still on file there.

What's the point of this? There will always be ways for you to be monitored. Get on with life.
Do you feel warm within your cage?

And have you figured out yet -

So uhh... just turn it off when it prompts you.

Mine is always turned off until I actually use the Maps app, and even then it's a no-brainer that they have to track it.

The iPhone one just does it, and is actually accessible fairly easily (provided you get your hands on someone's phone).

The fact is that if you are looking for a secure mobile device, the only thing you should be buying is a BlackBerry.

I worded it incorrectly. They don't have to, but Google says "We are going to track this if you turn it on."

Yes, it's a problem. No, they shouldn't do it. However, unlike the iPhone, they tell you it's happening and if you don't like it and turn it on, you are either a moron or you can't read and shouldn't have a smartphone anyways.

Your carrier tracks all of your location data anyways, regardless of whether or not you say yes or no.

That is true, however currently you need a warrant to get that data in the majority of places.

the problem with the iphone one was it was an open file anyone can get to.

with android how im reading it is google tracks you if you accept it, which imo isnt that big of a deal.

It is if you want privacy, but almost any piece of technology you hold or access is not private. Companies need to do their best to make sure all of this stuff is extremely secure.

I am not really interested in whether or not Google is tracking, I already know, I am more interested in why, and as far as I can tell, it's mostly down to "better" search and giving relevant ads.

Anyone who uses Google in any way, shape, or form is having their location and searches tracked, and they don't tell you. That is something that is far more disconcerting than them tracking your mobile location data.

People post constant updates of their location on Twitter anyways ("buying groceries w/ dad!" "sipping corona on the deck!") so really, who cares?

It's mostly used simply for advertising.
If I put that my current location is in, say, Starbucks on Facebook (Don't know why, I don't have a Macbook ) then they'll badger me later on with advertisment about coffee, thick-rimmed glasses and Apple Software.

Besides, most of my location history would probably involve porn.

They all do it. I don't see what the big deal is...

Why do people get worked up about stuff like this?

...modes and scales are still useless.

The difference is that they chose to do that. Besides, Twitter is just fucking annoying.

Although, I'm glad my cell phone is a very basic model. I'm sure they can track me with it, but they can't just open a file and see it.

Guess what, the corporations don't really care where individuals are going, they do it for marketing data. People who are upset about this are paranoid, it's not like you're being tracked to see if you're visiting hookers.
