What's UG's opinion on this? Has it happened to you and how did you feel afterwards?

My Dad used to search my room a lot when I was out because I came home smelling of smoke or something stupid. Since then, I've come home early most nights and never smell of anything - so my room hasn't been searched at all (or so I think).
Came home tonight to find my laptop moved and a pair of jeans on the floor which weren't there before - and my dad telling my he moved my laptop because it was "getting too hot". There was nothing in my room to find anyway.

It pisses me off when I find my room has been searched, especially since I've been a good little boy and have been concentrating on exams.

Your experiences?

I used to hate it. I once had condoms hidden under my bed and my mom searched around and found them, and had a freak-out because I was 15 at the time and she thought I was having sex with a bunch of girls behind her back.

Thankfully, when my dad came home from work and asked me I turned to him dead serious and said "Dad, I am not having sex with any girls." He took one look at the disappointment and shame in my face and instantly knew I was telling the truth.

But I mean, I've never understood why parents search their kids' rooms. What are they looking for? Condoms? Weed? Porn?

Even if they find out and punish their kids, the kids found a way to get the stuff once, they'll get it again, and be more careful with the hiding next time around. It's completely pointless and a misuse of trust and privacy.

I hate it because I am not into drugs and never stay out. My parents still search my room from time to time. I'll never do drugs, but I can't wait to have some privacy.
#6
I have nothing in my room to find, which would make it even more annoying if it got searched.

It never does get searched, though.

Happy to say my parents never carry out searches... I know this for certain because I've had some Green Rizzla sitting on my shelf for a couple of months.

It's so annoying, man, I'll get home and there'll be a car pulling away and I'll get inside and everything in my room has been moved and the word TELOS is written on my ceiling in blood. Or I'll hear a knock on the door in the middle of the night, and when I finally get there after tripping on a dozen fuzz pedals it'll be some dude in a black suit saying "I'm from the NSA, sir, and we'll need you to step outside for a minute," and when they let me back in my computer has a smiley face background that it never had before.

The police almost searched my room once. I was going to tell them to fuçk off and get a warrant because they had absolutely no reason to suspect I had anything - they were looking for shit my brother stole.

At least it's just your parents. I live in an apartment complex where the owners have a masterkey and can just waltz into your place, whether you're home or not (they're allowed to because it's in the contract). And when you have paraphernalia everywhere, it turns into quite a nuisance.

I hate it whenever I used to get my room searched. Condoms, fags and other unsavory things have been found.

They've stopped doing it since I was sixteen because I never lied and said what I use them for. Honesty and persistence on your part will make them give up. I just hated it because I didn't feel like my parents trusted me even though I never gave them any excuse not too.

I live in a dorm, and we get searched by the principal/dorm faculty once a year or so. It sucks because it takes forever and they might as well not even bother, considering they never find anything.

I think my parents searched my room a few times when I was younger. They found pot and talked to me about it. It was not so much of a big deal though but had to tell them it was for ''occasional'' use ( fuck that smoke weed 'errday ).

"My friend must have left that here, I don't even know what it is."

Then just brute-force maintain that statement.

I only ever had to deny having something in my room once, and...yeah. I'm all growed up now, I don't give a crap if people look through my stuff.

Yeah, but intelligent parents start to realise something is up when your friend has left the same lighter in your pocket 9 times

But it's not your room. It's your fathers (or mother's) room. They pay the rent/mortgage. They own the house, not you.

When you have your own apartment/house, then you can get angry.

I wouldn't mind honestly. There's nothing to find and it might get cleaned up a bit in the process

Now my laptop on the other hand...I keep that password locked for a reason.

But going out and doing things that your parent asked you not to do isn't? You abuse their trust, so why act surprised when they follow up on their suspicions.
#33
If my room was searched all that would be found would be my dakimakura, which would be awkward, but hardly anything incriminating

My parents would not look at me the same way for quite some time but i'd deal with it

That said i'd rather my secret kept safe

Could be the other way around. Either way, it's stupid to do stuff behind your parents back and it's stupid to not allow your child to do stuff that's his own business especially considering TS's age.
#35
it annoys me.
my parents have literally came within a foot of my hidding spot for alcohol and condoms.

I agree. I think my mom talking to me was warranted, but taking my stuff over and over has added a lot of strain between us.

That being said, there are just way too many possible places to hide things, she won't be able to find my stash again. So now she's just settled for guilt tripping me.
#37
My parents go in to "clean" my room when I'm away and when I come back loads of stuff is moved, porn is deleted and condoms are gone...
#38
Didn't bother me when I was younger. Now my dorm room gets searched when I go for major breaks (winter, summer, possibly spring and thanksgiving) but they're so lenient I don't really care about that either. These checks are really "as long as there isn't any booze/drugs/any other rule breaking thing out in the open your clear".

EDIT: They never really "searched" when I was younger but I would come home to find it cleaned now and then. Can only assumed they look at what they were moving.

I've had my mom go through my phone and gotten in trouble through that. It's easily the most frustrating way to get in trouble.

While it is your parents house and their rules and all that, I feel there should still be privacy. After getting me in trouble for smoking 34042304924 times, my parents pretty much just play stupid and I respect it.

Maybe I'm biased seeing as I'm not a parent but, I would never look around for things to get my child in trouble.
