and it occurred to me, if the wise men had showed up a day earlier with the gold, jebus wouldn't have had to have been born in a barn surrounded by a bunch of sheep and cows. but whaddaya gonna do? it doesn't make as nice a story.

Actually, in the Bible, they didn't show up the night of his birth, it took a while for them to arrive, like I heard it was something like several years, and there were definitely more than three magi. They're also often portrayed as simple shephards, when they would have been more similar to Jewish nobles.
