Why do things exist and there isn't just nothing?

Because you touch yourself at night.

But no. These thoughts were why religion started...

I had a friend who was held at gunpoint as a cashier. The robber told him to give him all the money in the register and what not. Apparently my friend then replied, "Would you like a slurpee with that?"

Because we have gravity in our universe, which causes the need for energy to separate objects of relatively large masses, and because we need to do work to bring two objects together of relatively smaller masses, there exists symmetry between them.

i.e The same reason that there exists no difference between (+++ ---) and ( ), we think of one as the opposite of the other, but they are only of different form.

Somethingness and nothingness are symmetrical. They are only of different forms.

reminded me of this from the Tao Te Ching

When people see some things as beautiful,
other things become ugly.
When people see some things as good,
other things become bad.

Being and non-being create each other.
Difficult and easy support each other.
Long and short define each other.
High and low depend on each other.
Before and after follow each other.

Therefore the Master
acts without doing anything
and teaches without saying anything.
Things arise and she lets them come;
things disappear and she lets them go.
She has but doesn't possess,
acts but doesn't expect.
When her work is done, she forgets it.
That is why it lasts forever.

Because if it didn't we wouldn't be here to observe it.

This. There has to be something to acknowledge the universe

But, like, what if there is just nothing, man? Like, who's to say that there actually is anything, dude? Like what if we're in, like... the Matrix... or it's all.... a dream or some shit...?

Yes, that is quite a wise passage. Humanity has depended on the ability to differentiate between objects to survive and evolve. It is counter-intuitive to think of a chair and a table as similar things, but rather, we choose to think of them as different, since they have different purposes.

As Science evolves, specifically Physics, we always attempt to unite different ideas and concepts into a more unified, more precise concept. Newton's equations explained to us the Physics behind the kinematics of objects, but they were quite imprecise with some concepts such as when the velocity of objects approached the speed of light. Einstein revolutionized this concept by creating a system that is reverse-compatible with Newton's, AND it predicts these answers much more closely than our Classical Mechanics.

Some think that the origins of the universe are hugely dependent on philosophy, and that to observe the universe, there must be an observer. Some go as far as throwing around the uncertainty principle to say that it is "consciousness" that is the "truth", but that's quite ignorant of genuine Physics or Science in general. As our Physics advances with M-theory, or perhaps a refined version in the future, we'll be able to create more technology to validate more and more of our predictions.

then there still has to be a body/vessel/energy/whateveryouwannacallit to have that perticular dream, so there still is something even when it's just a sleeping 8 yo
