Just started wearing a ring on my left hand (on the ring finger). I've noticed that when I play guitar, the ring bangs on the bottom of the fretboard and the binding around the neck. My question is, could this possibly cause any damage to the guitar?

Thx.

I doubt it. I've been playing with my ring on for a couple years now, and I've noticed no damage to the neck. (It's a fairly large ring; triple-band). It's possible there may be a nick depending on how rough the exterior of your ring is, but it'd be a gradual process, and wouldn't be very "damaging" at all.

I want to be a dick and say "take it off when you play" but it is probably an engagement or wedding ring >.>
yep

Your ring shouldn't do much of anything, but even if it does... who cares?

In the words of James Jamerson "the dirt keeps the funk". An unscratched guitar is an unloved guitar. If your not causing some wear and tear on your instrument, you're not spending enough time with it!!!

Well played, sir, well played.

It might but as far as i'm concerned its a good thing. Wear and tear like that just breaks it in for your hands. It gives the guitar some personality and it makes it solely yours. Plus if the ring is rubbing against something than that means that something is in the way, in the end having a little extra wood scraped away is only going to make things more comfortable.

I've been wearing a ring while playing for a couple years now - no noticeable damage, though I do notice it hitting the fretboard like you described almost every time I play.

It really isn't an issue at all.

I wear a ring on each hand (both on my ring finger) and haven't noticed any issues as far as wear and tear, but I do hit from time to time especially with fretting. I even find that occasionally my right hand one hits from time to time, but no huge damage.

Also the one is my engagement ring (right hand), the other is my wedding ring (left hand), my wife and I chose to get me an engagement ring, partly because it looks good, its becoming a very modern trend, and why should we have to spend all the cash?

You should be more worried about how the frets will scratch the ring. Sometimes I find the rings interfere with my hand's movement, or 'catch' on the edge of the fretboard.

This is a good point. My ring is scratched to shit. Which doesn't bother me, I think it looks cool (it's a black ring, now it has silver scratches on it). But if that ring is personal to you, it might be better to take it off.

never take it off, it's also a nice thing for slide/bottle necking on just a single string.

Unless it some big, honkin', man-ring like Tony Soprano would wear, I can't see it causing a problem.

My wedding band has never caused an issue.

Wedding rings destroy guitars. Pretty soon you won't be playing it much. Then if you want some new gear you will need "permission" or if you want a new guitar you have to sell one of your old ones to get a new one. Then the babies come a long and your studio get's transformed over night into the babies room Then your bitchen half stack is too loud and you'll posting threads about "killer amp for bedroom volume". But the bedroom get's turned into girly pillows and fluffy bed spreads so you get banished to the basement. Your amp will end up being a Vox amPlug and your USA made uber guitar get's sold and you want info on MIM guitars because that is what she said your budget is.

Take it off man.

and to the guy that his girl got him an engagement ring...You ever listen to Stormtroopers of Death. Killer old metal band with songs like speak english or die, what's that noise, and pussy whipped .

Actually being married has increased my budget. My wife is a guitarist and has expensive tastes. If she sees me on Guitar Center I'm yelled at saying that I better not be looking at anything under 700 or at least 500. Actually I tried SoD not my taste, I'm more of a European metal fan.

that ring is not creating any problem for me now! not even touch the guitar fret in any angle.

but yes after my marriage! the ring kinda hit the fretboard couple of times, then i started to play with the loose palm, so that the ring dont even touch the guitar fret.

u can see "glassgow kiss" where petrucci is playing with that ring comfortably.

i cant agree with you anymore!! comon dude we need our loved one beside us as well as the guitar!!

my wife never said anything about my guitar!! i even play guitar at midnight that i used to do, and she has nothing to do with it!!i also bought another guitar, and she really liked it

if a single ring blocked you from playing guitar, then you are not a man!!
try to carry both of the babies(guitar+girl) with you!! why u want to take it off like a looser?

actually, unless I have very crappy technique, my ring sometimes grinds along the edge of the neck near the 1st string side, and it has actually worn out the finish down the side of the neck. It doesn't matter much to me, and I know it's the ring, because the finish on the neck hasn't worn away anywhere else. just wear the ring would hit. this is after 2 years of owning this guitar and ive been wearing the ring for 4 years.

All I'd say is just watch where you play and see if your ring actually rubs against the neck, cause it may wear away the finish.

mine clacks against the neck as well, makes me nuts. i just take it off or move to the other hand.

This is why I only wear rings on my right hand. My friend's high-end Martin acoustic has some pretty noticeable gouges on the back of the neck because he's been wearing rings on the left hand.

I was wearing my ring before I even thought about starting guitar, so putting the ring on my left hand wasn't a big deal for me at the time.
