It's pretty much in the title. Name some people regarded as intellectuals that you think aren't quite as noteworthy as they appear. Not necessarily intellectuals that you disagree with. I can think of plenty of people I disagree with, yet I still think they're pretty damn smart.

I'll start. Never have been really impressed with Christopher Hitchins. Nothing against what he promotes or anything, I mean Dawkins who has similar views is alright. Just his reasoning and what I've seen from interviews. Shame about the cancer, though.

Am I the only one who thinks "biologist" before thinking "atheist" when I hear Richard Dawkins' name? It seems like he's only known for being a notable atheist.

George Carlin.

Flameshield activate!

People treat everything he says as though he's the world's greatest treasure. Sure, I like Carlin, but I'm sick of his worshipers. First and foremost, he was a comedian. Nothing more.

This too. He's a comedian, not a politician or philosopher or whatever you call it, people need to learn to take him with a grain of salt.

You're right and he is. This thread is about intellectuals being overrated though, and he is overrated as an atheist.

Really? I think that's because most folks want to perceive his comments and books that way. Read in a different light, he comes across as completely collected and reasonable. I think Dawkins is an honest man who give little credence to bullshit and insincerity.

I can't think of any intellectuals who aren't deserving of noteworthiness at the moment. I can think of a few assholes, but their behavior is separated from their ideas on paper for the most part.

Christopher Hitchens. Some of his atheism stuff is ok, but when he starts talking politics... howaboutno.jpg

Well I was talking about
Quote by Dawkins
The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.

Be it true or not, he's not exactly being polite about it.

On a different note, I just want to put out there that my favourite "intellectual" (I don't really like that word, but it's what we're using here) is James Randi. He's not a scientist or a doctor, nor does he pretend to be anything other than what he's trained to be (a magician): he's just a dude who loves to learn and has a bucketful of common sense. His lectures make so much sense, and he comes across as such a humble and polite guy, even when directly talking to people who are obviously full of crap. I James Randi.

Quote by rgrockr

Be it true or not, he's not exactly being polite about it.

I can't really see how he's being rude? A little unrelenting maybe, but he's giving reasons based on what's in the bible. He's not just saying "God is stupid and you're stupid for believing in him."

DON'T MAKE ME DESTROY YOU!

Why be polite? He's given plenty of reason to not tip-toe quietly and respectfully away from those who are legitimately delusional and in positions of power. What respect can be found in pandering around in a pussyfoot manner so as not to offend anybody? He takes a stand and does a great job and buttressing it. I think he's deserved the attention he gets, both as a biologist and an atheist.

Also, I've just remembered one person who I can't stand at all: Ayn Rand.

Definitely Ayn Rand. No one who believes in her knows anything about socialism, or her background as someone who was deeply disturbed by the 1917 Russian Revolution. I'm all for individuality, but using her crazy ramblings as some anti-democrat, anti-liberal weapon is insane.

I saw a documentary by Richard Dawkins once, and it was boring as shit. It didn't teach me anything, it just affirmed opinions I already had. Dowsing has no basis in science? How fucking fascinating.

Although I've read things of his about evolutionary biology which were more interesting.

I've known very sensible people who eventually became such vicious assholes after reading The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged that I can't stand being around them anymore. Pompous, naive, and outwardly hateful of anybody who wasn't raised in their well-off families and need a little help to get by such as food-stamps and etc...

Look, I'm not one to encourage welfare out the wazoo, but I understand that sometimes people are truly just victims of circumstances that they cannot control, and completely shunning them off from any help is low and bastardly. I'm not one to encourage laziness or a lack of willpower for work ethic, but goddamn. Some people just really took everything she said literally and to began acting that way in full force. Fuck that.

Although I really did like her novel Anthem. It's an entertaining read.

I'd like a source, but I still don't see how this de-values his contributions already made both to Cosmology and quantum Physics.
